This is my favorite hairstyle and I wish I was any sort of competent at hair so I could do it on myself. My mom used to braid my hair into a pony when I was younger because my hair is very fine and slips out of everything. I have to tie my hair into a literal knot when I put it up in a bun, otherwise it falls out in milliseconds. Hair pieces are great when the gym mandates a hairstyle that you cant do with your own hair, don't have time to do, don't want to damage hair, etc. Cheer hair trends have fluctuated between hair piece to no hair piece back to hair piece over and over. I think we're entering the no hair piece trend again. As an athlete, I preferred no hair piece/athletic look. As a spectator, I don't really care as long as it's not completely distracting. (Uniforms have gotten a hundred times more distracting than hair styles have over the past few years, imo.) If I were a parent, I'd probably choose what ever is the least amount of hassle - even if that meant using a hair piece.
