It's really trial and error but I think I usually do around 26"
Also, I usually get my ribbon through Tea Party Ribbons. The woman who runs it is really sweet and they had 3" black when I couldn't find it anywhere about 6 months ago.

You're better to go too long and then cut off extra from the tails until you find a length you like.

That's what i've been doing but I was only using 2 1/4" so it looked a little different.
