I had to google music covers.

Just incase anyone else was clueless like myself:
In popular music, a cover version or cover song, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording of a previously recorded, commercially released song by someone other than the original artist or composer.

I didn't either, but as far as I know, Varsity hasn't released anything regarding them being allowed or not.

As far as I know, Varsity was the main one pushing for the music changes. (They have the most $ to lose if sued.).

From Varsity website:

NEW MUSIC GUIDELINES: What to Expect When Attending a Varsity Spirit Event

Proof of Licensing

  • Teams must be able to provide proof of licensing, in the form of a printed copy, during registration at the event they are attending. This may include:
    1. Proof of purchase from a preferred provider
    2. If using a single song, receipt from purchase of single song
    3. If using an editor, the editor does not have to be a preferred provider; however, they must be able to provide you with proof of purchase from a preferred provider and proof of licensing for all sound effects and voiceovers included in the mix
    4. If using a non-commercial music provider, documentation that assigns all applicable rights to the team
    5. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] to request the appropriate documentation
  • If a team does not have the required paperwork, they will be given the option to count the routine verbally or perform to an approved track of music or a track with counts (provided by Varsity Spirit).
  • If a team does not have the required paperwork, and chooses not to count the routine verbally or perform to the approved track of music or a track with counts, the team will be disqualified from the competition and not be allowed to perform.

From a coach perspective, challenging something like that is a lose-lose proposition. Either you lose and look like a sore loser, or "win" and look petty. It is just frustrating to spend a HUGE amount of money and effort to follow the rules, then have someone (appear) not to have and have people talking about how fun their music was and how it added to their routine. I just hope that it really was a cover, but it didn't sound like it.

They were amazing! I wasn't crazy impressed by Midnight today.

I missed Midnight today, but thought they were great yesterday and know they have done really well all season. Wish I had seen Ignite, will have to catch the video.
