All-Star Angel Rice Moving To Cali Smoed For 2014-2015 Season

ETA: I can't help but wonder what Jenee must be feeling like after Senior Elite came 4th and Smoed came 1st in worlds.

She tweeted about how she feels. She's fine, and still happy with her decision. Obviously she didn't leave Smoed to get a ring (that wouldn't make sense, considering she got 2 *with* them), so them winning has no relevance. I'm sure she's no more disappointed in SE's placing than all the other girls on the team.

I realized, in the middle of my exam this morning (I'm such a good student), what irks me most about these "announcements" (not just Angel and not just about smoed) is the proximity to Worlds. The season literally ended a couple days ago and athletes are already "announcing" (I also have a problem with announcing to the world where they'll cheer next year but that's beside the point..) what gyms they're going to switch to. Why so soon after the season ended? How do they already have a place on the team? Were they in talks with the gym and guaranteed a spot on the team as long as they uproot their lives and move to town just for cheerleading?

I don't know, it's all starting to be a little much for me, hearing about athletes in high school moving to a different state just for cheerleading and gyms advertising on social media for level 5 athletes instead of working with those already in the gym.

Gonna bet and say that gitl Peyton from Oregon is a new member..

@Weezy as in this year the 2014 year is her last or she will super for the 2015 year?

I look at it like NCAA athletics--in hockey, for instance, a player can be drafted straight out of high school but delay signing until the team wants them or they're physically ready to play pro hockey. It's not uncommon for players to announce the second their season ends that they're leaving school to go play somewhere else.

Season's done. They've got no obligation to do anything with their previous gym.

I have my own opinion about the whole "moving to Cali" conversation, however Angel's situation is different to me and a lot easier to swallow. She not only cheers but has also started competing at world championship power tumbling meets. As amazing of a tumbler as she is she did not walk in the door and win Gold, it would make sense to me that her parents would move her somewhere she could get more advanced gymnastics training presumably from some of the same instructors that worked with Kiara Nowlin. I honestly (and I don't know this as fact) think that smoed was a secondary thought. I believe she was 12 the first time she won worlds so I really dont think that is a big driving force for her anymore. I also know that she considered not cheering at all this year after leaving Trinity so I really think it has more o do with gymnastics.

I honestly believe that In Angel Rice's case she wanted to go somewhere with a better power tumbling gym...because really she is INSANE and didn't they just add power tumbling as an olympic sport in 2016? If she wants to go to that now is probably the time to really gear up for it. Oh and then there just so happens to be a cheer gym nearby that's pretty famous known as California All Stars with another equally as famous team SMOED. Maybe she looked around on purpose for an area that had gyms to accompany both of what she wants.

Maybe a lot of people move to be on Smoed because they know what they're coming to? The people who move may not just want a Worlds ring, but to better themselves as athletes and like Eddie & Orby's coaching style. It's easy to get an insight of how their practices works because of their web show. Plus Cali are used to getting athletes from out-of-state, people can easily find room mates on the team etc.

I wonder if the volume of athletes moving to specific gyms is growing, or if we're just more aware of it now with social media being such a huge factor. Before twitter, even the board sometimes took months to realize an athlete had moved because unless tons of people were talking about it, you'd have no idea until videos started surfacing and you noticed them.

I do say, it kinda rubs me the wrong way a bit. With anyone. These kids are in High School, and are just picking and choosing where they want to cheer and are essentially uprooting their lives. This isn't like 'Oh I'm going from SOT to Cheer Athletics' this is 'I'm completely uprooting my life and everything to go cheer for a year.' Half these kids can't legally drive, yet they're allowed to do life-altering stuff like this? And please don't tell me Cali is the ONLY program in the country with a strict coaching style and that's why they're going. It's the appeal of competing on a team where you're essentially hand picked, and winning worlds is that extra icing. Maybe not for everyone, but I'd wager it's a fair bit. These kids aren't all leaving podunk allstars to go wherever they go, there are plenty leaving World-class programs to switch to others.
