I'm glad that the school will now be testing cheerleaders, we need to squash this wherever we can, as soon as we can.

I would also like to add (and I'm not speaking about U of L but successful cheer programs in general, be they middle school, high school, college/university, all-star, elite or Premier) that you should NEVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM. Focus on your own improvement because at the end of the day, you don't know what other athletes are doing to be as good as they are. It could be good, bad, legal, illegal... you just don't know.

Point 3: this is one of the reasons I believe colleges should be less stringent with weight limits and minimums for cheerleaders. Lifting requirements are definitely necessary, but cheerleaders (male and female) often get too caught up in their weight and use unhealthy methods to control it.

the marijuana and amphetamine dont really surprise me... first amphetamine is found in adderall, (not that i know if she was actually taking it) but TONS of college kids take it now a days, prescribed and not prescribed. i dont get why colleges dont drug test all athletes, regardless of the NCAA. heck maybe they should start drug testing the college marching bands as well.

to your second point - those drugs don't enhance performance, if anything they make it worse. i'm surprised she was such a powerhouse tumbler and taking heroin, which makes you weak, lose weight/muscle mass, and you're usually a shaky mess. she wasn't taking steroids and getting strong; those are drugs that destroy your body, not enhance your cheer skills. i guess i just don't understand the point you're trying to make there?

marijuana also stays in your system for 30 days so all that means is anytime in the last month she could have used it. heroin and the harder drugs have much shorter half lives so they were definitely recent. as @Kris10boo said, i don't doubt there are more cheerleaders using some sort of drugs in that program. she wasn't doing these drugs alone and i know her friends are in mourning but if i were james/misty i would be holding an intervention in that gym. (i know they are not the only gym with this problem and i don't mean to single them out... but i really, really hope they are learning from this and protecting their other athletes from another tragedy happening)

I'm not saying heroin helps (it doesn't) but steroid are also a huge problem (that's more what I was getting at). Perhaps she was taking the heroin for recreation, but unfortunately there are actually people that believe that if a substance makes you hyper and jittery it helps you energy-wise (think of all of the energy drink proponents out there). Some people apply that same reasoning to drugs.

I don't care why she was taking it. She's an idiot. I'm sorry she died and realize that she probably had no intention of that result. But there is no good that has ever come from heroin especially if mixed with the rest of that crap.

She wasn't just taking one drug...she was taking allll the drugs.
I'm guessing she was taking the amphetamine and heroin, then the xanax to control the side effects. The marijuana I'm not surprised about at all. It's sad but it's happening even at the all star level. Have we all forgotten about Worlds a few years ago when kids got drunk at the block party?

The only jaw-dropper was heroin...do you think something she smoked could have been laced with it?

Either that or she previously had an issue with painkillers (which isn't exactly unheard of in high-level sports) and then switched to heroin afterwards.

So sad. So preventable.

I won't divulge details in respect of the family but know that heroin is a much bigger and common problem than most people would think. (no not cheer related). You learn a lot when tragedies happen.

Replace "any" in my post with "many." Shouldn't make THAT much of a generalization.

And a simple Google search will show that it's a massive problem in Louisville. :(
