How many gyms are in your area? How do you choose which one to go to?

I don't know much about gyms in other areas other than my own, except what my CP tells me, but cheer has changed so much in the 4 short years my daughter has been doing it. When she first started, she started at a small local gym doing gymnastics. I had no idea what allstar cheer was until we started there and discovered their cheer program. She had done rec cheer but we never knew this other world existed. Anyway, when she started at that small gym, that small gym was one of very few in the area and there was only one big name gym in the area. Well, fast forward 4 years and gyms are popping up on every corner. So much that there are even THREE different gyms in one business complex. We now have THREE big name gyms in the area, CEA, CA and CAC. There are at least 7-8 smaller gyms in the area now too. Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that cheer is more available to young athletes. I remember when we were at our small gym, complaining because there weren't any choices. Be careful what you wish for... LOL! I just think it stinks because so many kids that have been together for so long are starting to split up among these big name gyms. A handful here, a handful there, etc. So these good friends now compete against each other. I've even noticed some of the older kids that have lost friendships b/c they are upset that their friend left or let their team down. I think too many options is a bad thing. Thoughts?

We have 2 gyms that are within 15 miles. They are both small gyms. One TE has levels 1-4. The other gym PS has levels 1-2. We started at TE. It is a great gym. It gave my CP's a strong foundation. We now drive to WE. It is about an hour and half away. It is a big gym. They have all levels. My girls are really crazy about their Coaches. It is a good fit for us. I think you have to visit different gyms and decide what is the best fit for you and your CP's.

Where I live there is one gym about 5 minutes away, and 2 that are half hour in opposite directions and 2 about 45 minutes away. I started at the gym that's 5 minutes away when I was little but when I realized I didn't like loosing all the time, my favorite coaches left the previous year to go to a brand new gym, and it was so disorganized that I decided to try one of the gyms 30 minutes away (same gym my coaches left for the year before). And I was at that gym from its second season till I graduated at the end of the eighth year and it was the best decision :) my gym was way more organized, great staff who knew how to make and train teams to compete well while also having fun. I would have never considered any other gym in this area besides the one I graduated from unless I wanted to drive and hour and half to another good program.

There are 4 within a 30 min drive from me, and another about 45 min away. I chose based on levels offered and coaches. But I'm thinking of changing after this season cos I'm not getting anything out of it anymore. It's a hard decision though, but basically, I'm not being challenged as an athlete and I feel like my efforts to improve aren't being noticed/coaching staff doesn't really care.

Define "in your area". If we're talking the 5 boroughs of NYC, there's 3 including ours. Outside of NYC there are tons especially in NJ but it would be quite a trek (sp) for us.

To my understanding, we have three gyms that would be considered local---local to me is within 30-45 minutes.

If we want to travel 60-90 minutes there is Top Gun Orlando, 2-2.5 hours would be Brandon, 5 ish hours would be TG Miami.

I'm sure there are tons of gyms I'm missing, but those are the ones I know of off the top of my head.

Choosing for me was kinda simple this go around, because I went for the gym that I knew of when I danced. Way back when, our teams shared the same building. They are a strong program with a nice history, and CP is young enough that she can grow in this program. She also attended open gym with them while we were on vacation and I was impressed by how welcoming everyone was---kids, coaches, and staffing, considering they had no expectation of her ever joining their program. Things changed for us at the last minute, had they not, local for us would have meant Brandon.

Will she ever decide she wants more (her current program has a R5, who knows what they'll have by the time she's a senior) and ask to travel to the other name recognize gyms? Maybe. Will I do it? More than likely yes.

I live smack dab in the middle of jersey so there's tons of gyms around me. 30 minutes to World Cup, 40 minutes to jersey all stars, 40 minutes to spirit explosion, 45 minutes to CJA, 50 minutes to south jersey storm. Not to mention the many small gyms that are around my area

I guess where you would be willing to drive to. w/in 30-45 minutes I guess. I think it's because of the growth here where we went from a few small gyms and one big name to so many in the area now...it has split the talent in so many directions and split friends. We have 12+ gyms w/in an hour of me. 8 of them w/in 30 minutes of me. It used to be just about 4ish.

I do not cheer but in my area there is 3 gyms that are somewhat close and 2 gyms that are quite far away, I live in sweden where most of the gyms/programs are located in Stockholm. if i cheered i probably would have started at one of the programs next to me and then moved on to one of the other gyms that are in their second year right now.

Ahhhhh. Charlotte.

Been here for 9 years in the cheer industry. Started much like you in a stout Rec type program 7 minutes from the house because we knew nothing of Allstar cheer. But the Charlotte landscape has changed considerably in the last nine years. It was ugly when we left the first program, ugly when we left the second. But on the whole, people get over it eventually. The owner of our first program actually came to the Showoff to support some of her former kids just a few weeks ago. She's down to one team and I'm pretty sure this season is the end of her 11 year run in cheer but she (for being the most upset when kids left) has really taken a great amount of pride in the fact she gave some pretty awesome kids the fire for cheerleading and I know (personally) anyway kept up with cp14 last year and was very proud what she started as a mini1 hit two perfect routines at worlds.

There are quite a few gyms in my area. I've only lived here about 18 months, so I'm not super familiar with the small gyms. Where we moved from, there were less gyms and they were more spread out. I think typically, you start off picking the place closest to your house. As you go through a season or two watching local competitions, you probably gravitate towards the program that seems to be winning/have strong routines or maybe even a style you like. Or perhaps you chose a gym that has more options for your child's age and skill level. I don't see too many options as a bad thing, if there are better options down the street, it will hopefully keep a program in check and force them to step up and be more organized, keep qualified coaches, treat their customers well, etc. Friends splitting up and going to different programs doesn't bother me very much. Its nothing personal, everyone is hopefully just doing what is best for them as a individual. It shouldn't harm a friendship and hopefully it encourages sportsmanship between programs.

Upstate South Carolina has more than I really thought. There is Carolina Crossfire Upstate which is a small gym that is 5 minutes from us. That is where we started. Still love them! :cloud9: Then there is Carolina Cheer and Tumble and Palmetto Cheer and Tumble that are 20-45 minutes away. They are both relatively small as well but for here I would think of them as medium sized. They have maybe 5 teams a piece. I'm not really sure what we are using to classify medium or large. We have at least three Recreation Cheer programs within 1 hour: Traveler's Rest Youth Association, Liberty Youth Association, and Palmetto Patriots. We have Rockstar Cheer that is 25 minutes from us and that is our home gym. :shaka: We have 14 (15?) teams (I should check on that) that include one dance team. There is at least one All Star Cheer team that is associated with a gymnastics gym less than ten minutes from our house. High School competitive cheer is HUGE in the Upstate so pretty much every HS program is associated with one of these gyms. That can make for some interesting parent room conversations during the HS competitive season.
Branching out farther there are Carolina Crossfire and ACX in Columbia both of which are probably 1 hour from us. Also CA Charlotte that would be 1 and 1/2 hours from us. Yes I did check Google Maps MORE than once when the location was announced!;) Rockstar Cheer currently has The Beatles (SmCo5) and The Rolling Stones (IOCo5) as their only World level teams. No secret that my CP strives for a World level team and the competition for that in our gym is quite stiff. Like it is really stiff. So CP continues to do her thing. She is relatively young and has plenty of time so she will keep working. With the talent pool that Rockstar currently holds and with the amount of new athletes coming in we are hoping that the gym will be expanding their World level teams within a few years. I have told her more than once that we are blessed to live close to a great gym.
I wonder how far it would be to CEA Charlotte or Stingrays? We are pretty much located halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte.

Our current gym is 35 minutes away without traffic. I believe that is the closest.

Add 30-40 minutes to the CA Charlotte drive (on a good day for traffic) to get to CEA coming from your direction. Sometimes it took me 45 minutes and sometimes it took an hour and a half. No. Lie. Traffic around the South loop of Charlotte is stupid.

I thought as much. That traffic is always so darn rough.
