When did they change their name to ICE? And I thought the Aurora location was the 1st and main one? I know next to nothing about Illinois cheer, though!
They were ICC until December 2010. They were located in Naperville, and moved to their current location in Aurora right around that same time (I really think only a month or so before they closed).

I remember all this clearly because we had just moved to Chicago and were heading out there THAT WEEKEND to have my girls try out. Someone on here (this was the same month I joined Fierce Board) PM'd me and said not to go there and that some drama was coming. I was waiting to decide what to do, when lo and behold that weekend they closed up and the owner was arrested. Come to find out this was the 2nd owner to have this charge.

I took my kids elsewhere and never looked back (well, maybe looked back a little, but only to side eye the bullet I had dodged!)

ICE bought them out shortly thereafter - not sure exactly when. Sometime in spring of 2011 I guess?

Side note: in the 4 years since, this secret source and I have gotten to know each other better, and "the source" has Never. Been. Wrong. About. Anything. (cheer related at least) I'd take what they say as the gospel when it comes to cheer.

And sadly the powers that be find it more important to worry about a citizen of one country competing for a gym located in another. SMH this sport has its priorities misplaced

You don't want to know anything about Illinois cheer. It will just make your heart sad.

I feel sad and I just heard this story.

What kind of reputation does Illinois have? And why THAT particuliar state?

Does anyone know if they did background checks? They definitely should do background checks, but just because a check turns out clean does not mean a person is trust worthy. It is scary. Recently a local police officer (with a clean record) was arrested for child pornography and other charges. He has been a local officer for over 15 years. Everyone thought he was a great guy. It is important to check backgrounds, but a clean background does not necessarily mean you can trust someone. :(

I don't think background checks will solve everything, but why is the person working with your kid for four days a year at camp undergoing more scrutiny than the person working with them three times a week, year round?

ETA: I love my job, I'm fine with the background checks, but I think the industry should follow the Varsity lead.

I have heard gyms argue it is too costly and that few will just be passed on to the customer in an already expensive sport.

I would gladly pay that fee as part of my tuition.

**remember kids, don't try this at home**

At the gym I coach at, the owner does a background check AND we have a background check done as part of our USASF professional membership.

And as for working as an NCA staff member (I assume it is the same for all Varsity brands) and I know there are other staffers on the boards, but we have to do an online concussion seminar/test, abuse seminar/test, as well as have a background check performed. And all of these have to be completed before our staff meeting. @yooolizzi, am I missing anything?

It blows my mind that people WORKING WITH CHILDREN wouldn't be given a background check. What the heck.

Maybe the fact that our behavior with kids is closely watched and noted, and anything out of the ordinary will be discussed. People have been removed from staff over behavior not being 100% up to par. But other than that, no, you got it all!

Illinois people can correct me, but IIRC there used to be 2 different ICE programs (one in Indiana- the original gym of the current ICE, and one in Illinois which I think was ICE Athletics). Once one of the owners of the Illinois ICE was charged, the other owner changed the name to ICC. Then the second owner got charged and the Indiana ICE took over the gym. This could be off a little though. It got confusing to me because there were two separate programs with the same, or similar names.

ICE started in Indiana (they still have 2 gyms there). They've been around for a loooong time (15 years or so maybe?) and they bought out what was Illinois Cheer Company/ICC a few years ago after one of the owners was charged for relations with a minor. ICC was previously Ice Athletics... That name change happened after the other owner was charged with something similar.
