If I wanted my daughter to follow gymnastics rules than I would have had her become a gymnast

I hope we don't follow the gymnastics rules EXACTLY - but I really think they would be a great start to inspire our own rules from. You can't deny this sport is SHADY!

There's nothing wrong with rules...or even a little restriction. Get them in place, by way of fair and open discussion, and I'll be happy to follow.
If they brought up these guidelines to the coaches and such, and said 'What do you think about these etiquette rules for next season?' I can't imagine people would have been outraged (unless they kept that theatricality bit in). Maybe some would be a little peeved at the music/choreo appropriateness bit, but I think it would have worked itself out. They kinda shot themselves in the foot by trying to be Big Brother.

The gymnastic rules are very well done. But at the same time and not to be rude, but we are not gymnasts and I love knowing that fact. I enjoy the fun of a competitions, wondering around a venue, and becoming friends with other athletes from different gyms around.
The gymnastics rules were established for gymnasts which we are NOT. We should as a collective sport come up with our own rules NOT take them from other sports which have a total different mentality then our own.

3. No jewelry, with the exception of one pair of stud earrings (one in each ear). All other piercing should be
REMOVED, not just covered with tape or Band-aids.
I wish we had this in cheer, where you HAVE to take everything out, not just taped for competitions. I can't stand listening to people complain about how they got hit in their belly button and they just got it done, even if they have it taped. Take it out, or wait till the off season. But of course we couldn't have the one pair of earrings part:)

Just for clarification, the reccommendation has been on the website all season and it was discussed at all of the regional meetings last summer.

No one is saying adopt the exact same rules. People are comparing gymnastics to cheerleading because they are very similar in tumbling skills performed and that they are both judged sports. You could add in figure skating rules for comparison, because that's a judged "performance" sport as well. I'm not familiar with them, but I'm willing to bet that they have some pretty specific rules regarding costumes and "accessories"....I know for a fact that figure skaters must wear full stockings under their outfits. I know that there were several who didn't like the feel of the stockings on their feet inside their skates, so they would cut the feet off, but doing so was risking a deduction.

As a coach - I love coaching ex-gymnasts. They are disciplined, respectful and the hardest working kids on the teams. Do you know HOW DISRESPECTFUL CHEERLEADERS ARE? Furthermore, how Disrespectful some of the parents can be? Has anyone logged onto twitter lately? Would you DARE see gymnasts acting like that at a meet? NO! You wouldn't. I would love more strict rules about how you act and would LOVE a punishable action. Parents should be included in that as well. I wish we had stricter deductions. Teach this kids something about respect. I would NEVER talk to an adult growing up in the way that kids have talked to me. Not to try to be egotistical - but I am a pretty strict coach. Kids typically don't talk back to me - so the fact kids have talked to me the way they do, I can't imagine how they talk to someone who they KNOW then can get away with it and walk all over.

Agreed, but of course there are some very rude and disrespectful coaches so they should be added too. :)

I'm a bit confused.I thought people were mad BECAUSE all of these new random rules being enforced but now there isn't enough?

Key word.... RANDOM... I would feel much different about the new rules if they went through the correct processes, talked to the right people. I would hope if a change was made implementing some of these gymnastics rules it would be done over time and voted on properly.

being a competitive gymnast for 10 years, i have never heard of you having to achieve a specific score in an all-around before moving up to the next level. many girls at my gym went from level 5 to level 7 and completely skipped over 6.

also, being a competitive cheerleading for 3 years, i have come to the conclusion that the two sports are COMPLETELY different, even though many people believe that they are alike. i would not even compare the two sets of rules because even the meets are different. it is a different atmosphere and way of doing things. thats why cheerleading is cheerleading and gymnastics is gymnastics.

being from both sides, the way that tumbling is taught is very different as well. in gymnastics, i had to do thousands of backhand springs until they were perfect before even thinking about adding a tuck. at other gyms, however, many people were in a level too high for them and they were just throwing skills that they had not perfected. it was that coaches decision to move their athlete to that level and it should be the same way in cheerleading. the restrictions just are not fair to those who have used their technique to perform the skill correctly, unlike those gyms that do not.

I can't pull up the qualifying scores online, because they're in my JO Handbook, which is at home (I'm away this weekend judging cheer). However, if your gym is following USAG/JO regulations there is a minimum qualifying AA score that must be met to move up to the next level. There are cases where an even higher (pre determined) score would allow a gymnast to skip levels. They can also "test" a level in order to move up, a certified USAG Judge would have to evaluate and sign off on the "move up". There are systems in place to ensure that the athletes have mastered the skills for a level before moving up....you have to be strong on all 4 events, not just one. In cheer, if you're a strong stunter, but lack tumbling skills, they can still put you on a L5 team. And the variation between L5 from Podunk All Stars and F5 is so vast that it's not even fair to say they're the same level. In gymnastics a Level 10 is a Level 10, no matter where you go.
