Uhhhh i would die if that happened to me. Thats like the level of embarassment where it keeps you up at night 10 years later when you remember it and ut makes you cringe. My best friend got hers at 16 too. I always thought that was so weird because it's so late but I guess it's better than 8.5 lol.

It has stuck with me for the last 6, and I don't think the memory is going to go away any time soon. Fortunately now I can laugh while I cringe about it instead of cry.

Yeah 8.5 is scary early, especially since my own CP turns 8 this year! I may need to buy the celebration pack a little earlier than I was thinking.

Oh this is an interesting derailment of the last derailment. Since we're sharing lol. I was 13 when I got mine. I have a lot of older sisters so I knew what was coming. I also knew where babies came from at a young age. I was never given the sex talk by my parents. @omgitssydthekid that's kind of horrible and funny at that same time. I would've been embarrassed if mom had done that. I did get my period once while I was in class. Super awkward to have to go the nurses office with your jacket tied around your waist.

for parents not great at period/body function discussion or honestly anyone with CP's approaching that age, American Girl (doll company)'s book The Care and Keeping of You is an awesome guide that made up for a lot of the lack of communication in this area from my mom; or it could be used as a great tool to guide your discussion. Highly recommend.

I had that too! Everything I know can be accredited to that book (I kid, but at the time...)

Yes! I had that and my middle school had a classroom set for our 6th grade health class.

So real talk, does being overly active help delay when you start your period? There were always talks of this one flyer in high school who's mom was doing everything she could to delay her daughters period so she wouldn't start getting curvy and have to quit being a flyer. Is that like a real thing?

My mom got that for me too after she found out I started mine. I feel like getting that book is another rite of passage for teenage girls.

We have come full circle.

But I think there is some truth to that.

I know that body fat percentage and weight plays some role in when young girls start.

It's also the reason why many young girls being treated for anorexia don't have them. Your period becomes irregular and can actually stop if you have no body fat or are operating at a dngerously low weight.

However, curviness begins at different points for different kids. There are kids who have developed breasts at 10 but do not get periods until 13. So really, delayinga period may not change that.

I did competitive gymnastics until age 15 and was in the gym for 18+ hours a week and within the three years after I quit and started competitive cheer, I went from being 4'8" to being 5'5" (and now I'm 5'8" at age 22, I grew 3 inches after quitting cheer at 19). 6 of those 9 inches happened within the first year after I quit. I'd say it holds some truth based on my own experience.

I was 13 too, I was scared before I got it that it would be at school, but luckily I was at home.

And in reply to the weight thing, someone told me you had to be 51 kilograms? I don't think that's true, although that's about my weight now, because you wouldn't be that heavy at 8. I think it's something to do with body fat, which is why gymnasts don't tend to get theirs.

Also, is anyone else is/was scared of using a tampon? And do they hurt? I'm scared of using one :|

Oh I got mine at home too. No they don't hurt. The box has directions of how to use them. You need to relax before you use them. Don't tense up (happens sometimes if you're scared) or it's harder to use.

I have never met a mom attempting to delay a kid's period. Not that they'd come out and tell me.

I have met some high school moms who were way too concerned about their HS kid's weight and height in relation to the incoming sophomore or freshman flyers.

Or the parent who asked me about how tall some of the middle school girls (incoming freshmen) at the spring clinic were.

1. I don't know.

2. Even if every flyer trying out is 4'11, why does it matter? You can't change your kid's height.

I was 12 when I first got mine, but to this day (I'll be 22 in March) it's still not regular without the help of birth control. I have PCOS so I know that plays a role in it, but I was always jealous of my friends who got theirs consistently and they were jealous of me because I never got it.
