Back up the train. Are you saying D2 has stricter crossover rules than D1 Summit???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
No, D2 is 3 teams per athlete and can cross to any level. D1 is 2 teams per athlete and they can only cross up or down 1 level.

If your kid is now on a team that is competing on fri/sat or sun/mon, you have to miss at least one day of work and school whereas if you were previously competing Sat/Sun you could have made it work if you chose to. Not everyone has infinite days off from work. And not everyone lives in DFW like you and can drive home after the event. If your team competes late on Monday, now you're there until Tuesday for another weekday missed from school/work.

And a significant number of families across the board have at least two kids in the sport. STP was already pricing families out with their price-gauging of hotel costs. So let's add even more nights. yay.
I see what you are saying but I think it is the same either way. You have a day before you compete and a travel day after. So either way everyone is missing 2 weekdays.

Compete Fri/Sat - Missing Thursday, Friday
Compete Sat/Sun - Missing Friday, Monday
Compete Sun/Mon - Missing Monday, Tuesday

NCA doesn't allow crossovers outside of level so the only group this will effect is cross overs from 4.2 to Level 2. Those athletes will be competing 3 days.

We travel to NCA from out of state. It's an expensive competition for us (airfare, hotel, food, etc) but we do love the "bigness" of it. Part of what made the cost of going to NCA worthwhile, was that it's exciting to see so many great teams compete and fun to be able to support all the teams from our gym too! But moving the tiny and mini teams to another place and time will leave them out of getting any gym-family support. Which doesn't apply to my family, but I'm sympathetic to that situation. And for us to support our level five teams will now require extending our stay (if we choose to even do that) and it will then increase days missed from school and work and costs for the additional overnights. I feel like with these changes to NCA, they're being inconsiderate of our time and careless in regards to our budget. The only benefit I've seen discussed is less halls and more opportunity for level 4 to compete in the arena. Both of which seem unnecessary to me. NCA is big and crowded and a long day. And that's just the way it is and in my opinion, is just fine. And let the arena remain level 5 only - they've earned that.

NCA made this decision with the mini teams because most teams outside of TX, OK, AR and LA already don't bring their tiny/mini.

L1 Small Mini - 12/15 teams from TX, OK, LA
L1 Small Mini D2 - 13/14 teams from TX
L1 Large Mini - 2/2 teams from TX
L1 Tiny - 8/10 teams from TX, AR
L2 Small Mini - 8/12 teams from TX, OK
L2 Large Mini - 1/2 teams from TX

The Tiny and Mini divisions are already largely regional. I understand having gym family support but I think for the most part they will still have that. They are moving the Tiny/Mini division during NCA All Star Prep Nationals. These gyms will probably have their All Star Prep programs there to support the Tinys/Minis.

I also love the return of non-Level 5 teams to the arena. It used to be that everyone who made finals got to compete in the arena. About 8 years ago my Jr 2 team competed in the arena. It is only recently that they have gone to Level 5 only.

If NCA thought they would lose a large portion of their client base by making this change then they wouldn't have done it. I can almost guarantee this was ran by some people (gym owners) before being released. Hooray for shorter days at the convention center!

Not if you have multiple kids on multiple teams. The families with more than 1 athlete are going to be hurt in this. As if they are not already paying a lot of money.....

Those poor coaches. 2 days of ALL DAY competition is tiring enough... now 4 days straight? Not to mention that now the coaches have to longer hotel stays, more food allowances, and less time actually working. Those expenses will go to the parents. What about that parent that has a L4 athlete and and a L5 athlete, now they have a 4 day trip as well. Kids missing extra school. Oh and don't forget about the 3rd CP, their tiny daughter will be returning in another month for NCA round 2. This sounds like a brainstorming session that didn't fully get thought out.

Not a fan of this, I don't have a dog in the fight since I thankfully only have one athlete however families are going to get royally screwed with travel time from school and money. Plus NCA is the time where I get to see my peeps from across the country all in one place and if we are spread out on different days then that messes up my social life. I understand that NCA gets packed - how about they get rid of Dance and do something separate for them?

And please don't move NCA to Disney - NCA is Dallas and there is no venue like the arena.

My daughter is currently level 4. If you think for one second she is going to leave before watching her friends on our gyms level 5 teams compete, you are nuts. This year was our first year at NCA, and it was already BY FAR the most expensive comp I've attended...Summit included! If you want to be within, oh I don't know, 10 miles of the CC expect to cough up big bucks for the privilege.

This is really sappy but there's something about seeing a team or gym you're obsessed with compete live that holds a special place in your heart. I would have died without seeing Cali live if I hadn't gone in 2012 just to watch. If I was cheering and my gym went to NCA, I'd finally be able to see my favorite level 5 teams compete...but only after making my parents pay for another night in the hotel, possibly another day of a rental car, and another day eating out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner since I would've been done on Saturday.

I found that interesting as well, which is why I shared. Do you really need STP when the city owns the freakin hotel and knows exactly who is there and why?

STP is how the EP gets rebates AKA kickbacks. There is no need for it, the EP can sign a hotel contract guaranteeing a certain number of room nights in order to get comp or discounted space at the convention center. If the rates are good, everyone will book within the blocks. And they can even take rooms out of their main block to create sub blocks for each gym to book from.

I understand wanting to track the number of room nights brought into a city by a particular event, but if the rates are good enough then everyone will book in the block instead of on their own and you wouldn't need the stupid STP rule.

Even hoteliers don't like STP.

Not a hooray for Parents with more than one kid competing in different levels that don't start and end on the same day.

Sounds like a way to just make money. Traveling down here is expensive enough...now throw in another day in a hotel.

I cant even image how much it will cost to get into the competition. -_-

I'm at a large (possibly mega) gym and I'd guess most (or at least 4o%) have several kids from one family competing in different levels. Do we actually think Varsity would change ANYthing if it didn't go back to money as 'patient zero'?

Sure it was thought out. They know they now get FOUR days of paid admission rather than 2. Double your profit. Cash only!

While I can understand that Varsity is trying to make more room for more team, perhaps, and shorter days at the convention center, in reality it makes it more expensive with more missed days from school for families that have more than one child cheering. I only have one but it will mean we won't be able to support our other levels that perform on days other than ours. That makes me sad. As a gym, we enjoy supporting each other and seeing our friends up on stage.

There are definitely unintended consequences with this change but it seems it's done and there's nothing any family can do about it. Just really frustrating from my point of view.
