All-Star The Current State Of Allstar Cheer

There are many parents and coaches that have sounded alarms for years. Years. They were all summarily dismissed or discouraged (one way or the other) from speaking their fears. Those that kept speaking got branded with the term conspiracy theorists, alarmists, doom sayers, etc. that continues to the day.

The current state is not sustainable. On one hand after two years of pushing for numbers to show all this growth, a number was supposedly released at a USASF meeting (it was reported by an industry insider) that All Star Registrations had grown by over 8000 athletes. That however only counted for new athletes that registered to compete. It does not mean they ever competed, or have remained in the sport. There is also no industry tracking at least that I am aware of of athletes that are no longer cheering due to reasons other than aging out. So from that point of view it only looks like growth, so what is the problem?

The problem is that on the gym owner side, there are losses that are killing gyms. Costs that they can not control. Gyms closing right and left and no one is batting an eye. So many are trying to keep up with the Jones when they filed for bankruptcy 3x already. So many are chasing the new bling, the new cheerlebrity, the new fad. All of that distracts from the fact the costs are eating away this industry. IMO it feels like those at the top have to know what is really going on at the gym owner/coach/parent/athlete level and are simply doing what they can to make what they can and cash out. Not all of them mind you but enough that no real change is occurring on this front.

There are numerous affordable competitions, end of year events to attend to control costs. They too offer jackets, rings, trophies, etc. Some even offer a rebate program as well. The issue is one by one they are being bought out by a certain company with owners being silenced from announcing it until after gyms have registered and can't get a refund. The ones that won't sell out have seen venues blocked, hotels blocked and other behaviors that many would say are sure signs of a monopoly but those who support it say is an oligaphy. (sp?) I have had numerous friends told point blank that if they did not sell out they would be shut down. Blacklisted. Silenced. Who does that but someone trying to make sure you have no other option but their events and vendors. The people who are trying to provide reasonable cost saving events are being run out of business just like many of the small gyms are.

The blame is then put on small gym owners that they are all bad business people and coaches. That is why they could not keep their gym open. Sorry but that is complete BS. I have seen too many lose their gyms and their passions over costs that they could not control. Costs that are continually promoted to their clients as you must have this, go here, do this or else your gym is no good. or else it is a natural market contraction that must happen and it is better for the athletes because they get to go to a better bigger gym. SMH.

We used to be able to control costs by staying wherever we could. Now with stay to play, that eliminates that option and drives the cost up even more, often for a crappy hotel miles away from the venue.

Parents who ultimately control the purse strings who won't say no also have some culpability. There are things like uniforms, bows, practice wear etc that they can say we don't need all that and wont pay for it. Heck when I started in on the cheer side of things a t-shirt and soffee shorts were all that were required to practice in. Now we have different outfits for different days, special events, end of year events, coordinate hair bows, etc. Most of that is no longer optional as it once was. Yes they are cute, but they cost money! (In my Mr Krabs voice) Oh but you can mark it up and make a profit! Not when you have parents with sleuthing skills better than the FBI that will call the vendors, find out what it really costs and then let everyone know that you are an unfair gym owner trying to make a profit selling a 3 dollar sports bra for 5 dollars! Shame on you!

If there is blame, we all must take a share. We have fiddled while Rome burned. Where do we go from here is what concerns me now.

I think we, also, have to take into consideration that these venues for these mega events are getting maxed out. One of the best ways to control your event populations is to increase the price and hope some gyms won't register OR, you extend the event and hope people will continue to come because of incurring the additional travel day(s). In all honesty, I would rather pay higher athlete fees for a 2 day event and hope others drop out because, the days just keep getting longer, and worse yet, extended to 3+ days. Higher athlete fees are much cheaper than additional days of hotel, food, admission, coaches fee, on top of missed school/work, etc.

There's also the "Varsity" effect. Even large gym owners must bow to them, now. Want to get a discount on comp fees? Buy our $300-$500 uniforms. Move to GK or Rebel? Get shut out of Varsity comps or your parents suffer the costs of the competitions. Think it doesn't happen? I believe it does. We're talking millions of dollars! I don't think a company like Varsity would leave it on the table.
Then, what about when your child is on a Worlds contending team? Then, they've really got you. You want to compete against your peers, but the travel...and the fees...and the hotels (what is it now? Stay to play?)...even larger gyms can't escape the scam!

I also echo everyone's disgust at EP ticket prices.

There's no reason a parent can't get TWO free tickets to watch his/her own child.
this is probably a problem for all sports, if every parent of every athlete at every competition/game/olympics, etc demanded that they should get two free tickets, slowly sports as a whole stop making money. I can understand the frustration, but the only reason why i wouldnt support it completely is because you always have con artists out there who go and ruin it for everyone, which is probably why they dont do it to begin with.

I look at when my CP started. There was no special practice gear, no special T shirts/bows for certain comps. Uniforms were not blinged out and crazy prices. I feel sorry for the families that are just starting out in the beginning of there All star career, as it will only get worse....I compared the price of comp fees to when we did it even 2 years ago, WOW!

The additional admission fee for the parents to these events is just UNNECESSARY... Period. The CP fee should include at least one admission for a parent or guardian. Besides having already paid a car note to even be there. Over 90% of these kids are MINOR CHILDREN.... a parent/adult/guardian or chaperone would have to bring the CP to the event. No Vaseline at all.
Who receives the admission fee? The event producer or the hosting venue?

"Stay To Play" is soooo not cool. Now, why would I register for a competition and not "actually" come? Seriously? This is my CP first year and STP has totally caught us off guard. I had researched the "mandatory" competitions that our gym would go to and was like ok, I actually have close family that live in these cities all I need to do is look for some great air fares for one competition (thank God). WRONG. "You have to go through company "X" because of the STP policy or our team can't compete" Total hustle. Go search one of the listed hotels on another site heck call your AAA agent and I can assure you the price is much cheaper. SMH #this may be our CP first and only year of All Star Cheer unless some things change. Also, I totally agree that 5 sets of practice gear is unnecessary too again, another little detail I had no idea about.

For baseball, we very, very rarely pay admission fees. The tournament fee or player fees covers the cost of the field, umpires, coaches, balls, whatever. I'm literally sitting at a game right now that I paid $5 to watch. The money is going toward a childhood cancer foundation. My son pays at least five games a week.

I know this won't help the true underlying issues with this, but usually there is a waiver of some sort.

I think what is missing in AS Cheer compare to other youth sports and drives up the cost of everything is the lack of outside sponsors...

I remembered when my son played Little League baseball, I spent minimum amount of money for uniforms and the team charter buses for away games because often these buses were donated or the parents collectively paid a minimum sum for the trips...Furthermore, even when my daughter did gymnastics, the gym had outside sponsors too and the gym charter buses for the teams to travel.

I think AS Cheer have reached that crossroad and must think of other avenues to keep their clientele and trim the fat and all the extravagance- stop with the fashion shows and wear simple practice wear and practical uniforms. It is nothing wrong with wearing the same uniform for more than one season...Think about the NBA, NFL and all those professional baseball teams, their uniforms are iconic and pretty much worn like a trademark....

PS: Cutting the fat with uniforms can happen simply by athletes renting from the gym and at the end of the season returned uniforms (cleaned) or pay a cleaning charge or if uniform is damage, pay replacement cost...

I don't agree with this. My son has played baseball for years. Every year his uniforms become more extravagant. No bling our cutouts, obviously. Lol! This year he has FOUR jerseys, I think. Each one costs probably $35 or more. Every year is a completely new uniform wardrobe and we pay for it. There are WAY more youth baseball teams, so it's less expensive to make their uniforms. I think the most expensive jersey we ever bought was $70. Too much and more than we've ever paid since. The individual equipment is far more expensive than any individual will purchase in cheer...I think his glove was $400 and he'll need a new one for college ball in the fall. Not to mention a catcher's mitt, because he plays there, too. We pay equal amounts for cheer and baseball for "tuition" and uniforming (outside of individual equipment). It's the travel and competition fees that make cheer much less affordable.

For the record, high school baseball in my state, outside of high school ball, runs October-January (off-season training) and June-July (league and tournaments).
