so do i.

think my surface idea would have helped?

LOL.. well, he was kinda right. It looked like they were doing some single base stunts. Center flyer started to fall and looked like she grabbed flyer next to her. That flyer fell and hit her head. It was kind of hard to tell exactly what they were doing because of camera angle. It appeared as though she might have been knocked out becasue she wasn't moving and/or trainers didn't let her move. However, once they got her immobilized, she was able to smile and give a thumbs up. I am sure her other teammate feel awful, but it was simply an accident.

unfortunately last time we had an accident the college cheer rules got more restrictive. i could see this happening again depending on how much traction this has.

^^^^^^^^ I was stunned at the stupidity expressed by some in their comments, but more so by the callousness. I was poised to fire away when I realized "what is the point?", while the ignorant can be enlightened, stupid is forever.

The issue is that when someone gets injured in sideline cheerleading it doesn't stop the cheerleading... it stops the sport they are supporting. And at basketball games it is SO high profile that last time there was a serious injury (NIU cheerleader doing the fight song while being led off on a stretcher) the rules for college cheerleading changed dramatically. No more double fulls, no trick flipping and twisting twice (kick doubles), no more flipping and twisting stunts, only level 3 ish stuff at basketball games (I know there are some finer details I am missing). Now this happens again and with social media being able to plaster things everywhere I can see things getting more restrictive. The issue is they don't just restrict what happens at games... it is across the board.

I guess long live international open!

It's up to about a level 4 for all girl and pyramids. Squads are still allowed to perform level 6 stunts and pyramids at football games, though.

What flyer in their right mind grabs the flyer next to her to save herself? I thought we were taught not to do that on mini teams.

Double fulls were banned from Nationals before that incident I thought? I think I was a sophomore in college when she fell (actually I was in Atlantic City at our league tournament when the rules went into effect) and I don't believe double fulls were allowed my freshman year, 2005-2006. At basketball games no flipping baskets are allowed, no double downs (or full downs?), no twisting tumbling, no 2 1/2 high pyramids, no one armed coed stunts (cupies/awesomes). I think that's the gist of it.

This story blew up on my newsfeed last night with lots of former college cheerleaders mad because as others have said, this is exactly the reason why we're so limited at games. And also, first rule of cheerleading is catch your flyers. Every team I've been on, especially coed, this has been drilled into our heads. Take car of your girls!

I've done it before, in practice only though with lots of extra spotters. Of course you know not to do it, but on a basketball court, instinct probably takes over.
