You should make a video tutorial of this! :)

I put a few step by step photos in this thread too, back on page 3, but I've been thinking about filming a tutorial. I do one for our team each season as part of being team mom, but others have told me to film it and post it online too.

It would be very much appreciated of you did! :)

Okay, so I may have officially been converted now. I was anti-Curlformer, thinking they'd never work in my CP's thick, heavy hair, and another mom convinced me to try them out. I've always been all about the hot rollers/curling iron for cheer hair (Posted my step-by-step photos a few pages back), but we did a trial run last night with Curlformers. They are not quite a full as with heat styling, but these will literally save me over an hour of styling time on her hair. This is how they turned out, and this is with no hairspray:

Ignore the one long curl I messed up. I put too much hair in that one and it didn't dry all the way.

i have really thick/heavy hair too & curlformers worked great for me last season (this season we're not curling). they stayed perfectly curled the entire day & looked really nice!

I ordered a set yesterday (her hair took all 40 in the extra long/wide set), and we are going to try this for WSF Indy this weekend. Not only is my CP's hair super thick/heavy, but she's also growing it out right now to donate to Locks of Love, so straight, it's halfway between her shoulder blades and her waist. This will save me sooo much time now!

i used the same ones! good luck this weekend & that's great she's growing it out for locks of love! for my hair i would shower & towel dry it then put it in half up half down then put the curlformers in (using hairspray) & slept in them then in the morning take them out & add a little more hairspray & my bow. some people don't like sleeping on them but i found them a lot more comfortable to sleep on than regular sponge curlers.. maybe i'm just weird:rolleyes:

ETA: i would leave a section of hair out of the half up half down for the poof (sleeping in a poof wouldn't be a good idea) & do that part in the morning & join the poof with the half up part together with 1 more ponytail before my bow!

I've been the go to mom for hair instruction/styling on my CP's teams (which got the best of me at one competition when I did 4 girls hair in one morning). My CP has super thick, super straight, HEAVY hair, and for us, hot rollers are the only way to go. She used to do pageants, and we learned a lot from that. Here are the steps that I follow:

1. Wash hair the night before, using clarifying shampoo and NO conditioner. Towel dry hair & apply a super hold gel. We use the Suave level 10 gel. I do not re-wash her hair for the 2nd day of a 2-day competition. We affectionately call this "Day 2 Hair."

2. Pull hair up into whatever style for the competition the next day (half up/half down, ponytail, etc.) and use lots of hairspray. I prefer, as someone mentioned above, Freeze-It brand. It's in a gold can, and I can find it at Walmart or Walgreens by us.

3. I go over my CP's hair with a hairdryer, while it's styled, to set the style and hairspray and to dry her hair before bed.

4. In the morning, I smooth down any fly-aways and re-spray with hairspray and put in her bow BEFORE curling. I use the Remington Ionic hot rollers, and I make sure to leave them plugged in to heat up for at least 30 minutes before use to get them very hot.

5. Taking small sections of hair, I spray each section with Redkin Hotsets setting spray (Redkin #22) right before rolling. This not only smooths the curl but it sets it better with the product on it. I do this for all of her hair, using all the rollers, smallest on the top, biggest on the bottom. After all the rollers are in, I spray over the whole thing with hairspray.

6. I leave the rollers in for at least 45 minutes (during this time we get dressed, eat breakfast, apply make-up, etc.). Starting at the bottom, I take out the rollers. After I unroll each, I split the curl into 2-3 smaller individual pieces of hair, re-spiral each around my finger, release it, and spray it with hairspray. It's time-consuming until you get the hang of it, but now I can fly through it.

7. After all hair is unrolled, I go over the whole head of hair one more time with more hairspray so that my CP's hair is hurricane proof, LOL.

I've received tons of compliments on my CP's and others' hair for cheer and pageants, so despite the fact that this is probably a longer process, it seems to work. I've attached before and after pictures of my CP's hair so you can see the end results.

does anyone have any recommendations for a heat protectant spray? i use a curling wand and absolutely love it, but between that and my straightener, my hair needs some help. i definitely want a heat spray.. i just don't know what brand?

both my straightener and curling wand are made by Sedu. Sedu also makes heat spray but i'm not sure.. has anyone used it ? or have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

you said you dont wash it for day two, dont her curls get "deflated".. and when she sleeps on they dont they get destroyed?? i tried but the next morning my hair was a giant knott:(

We used to wear our hair half-way up and curly too. I didn't wash my hair the second day either because I have thick, silky hair. Instead, we would leave my hair half-up and re-roll the hair before I went to bed on day one with small rollers. When we took them out in the morning, the hair looked great and held the curl nicely. DO NOT try to sleep on your hair without re-curling it! Hope this helps! :D
