when i tried high school cheerleading as a freshman last year, then went back to allstar <3, i told my coach i could not be at a game. he was NOT a happy camper when i said this and yelled in my face, "why can you not be there!?!".....excuse- "i have tickets to a chicago blackhawks hockey game...glass seats...i am going!" and i went :) and was on tv!!!! best excuse EVER!

I've had to practice without my 2 big toenails before... It was exponentially more painful than breaking my nose (and having surgery on it). But they didn't just fall off, it was a result of basing a full basket gone awry
Do not underestimate the power of toes hahahah
I feel ya. I've had both my big toenails fall of MULTIPLE times each. Not fun. They throb and ache a lot.

Oh yeah, and my coaches also a have a "2 weeks prior to comp is ABSOLUTELY mandatory" Any practices scheduled for us 2 wks before comp we MUST go to. The consequences are either you don't compete that comp. or you're off the team. It depends on which the choose.

Our coach randomly told everyone yesterday that we'd have practice on monday to rework everything to add some difficulty and clean things up etc etc. She said she understands its last minute and if you're still traveling or out of town she gets you cant be there, but we really need the whole team. Then I see girls talking about how they're not wasting their last day of break at practice. Stuff like that upsets me so much! And its the same girl who keeps saying she wants to go to state soooooo bad. Clearly you don't. And then theres another girl who got her wisdom teeth taken out of friday the same day i did, and she claims she cant be there. I've been in extreme pain for days and can't even take the pain killers they gave me cause it turns out my stomach can't handle it. I'm not allowed to do anything but you better believe i'll be there tomorrow mocking everything with my team.
I admire your dedication. When I got my wisdom teeth out, I didn't go to practice 2 days later. But it wasn't because I wasn't dedicated, it was because, A). I was still dizzy and nauseas and very sleepy from the pain killers. B). hadn't showered or brushed my teeth in 2 days. and C). I didn't want to go to practice and then throw up or stand up and be dizzy, and not have my mom there to help me. I really wasn't feeling up to it, and I not only had 4 wisdom teeth out, I also had gotten 4 other teeth extracted at the same time... so my pain was doubled...

to be honest i would miss cheer, and the sport i do now swimming, for a glass seats at a blackhawks game any day :p

THIS.
but then again my coach and my entire team would probably come with me...
I coach, but we have season tickets to Capitals, I cant tell you how many games I have had to miss to be at practice (makes me sad, but hey..what can you do!). I think one thing that bothers me the most, is like others have said, when parents make up excuses for their child. Its always interesting when their friends come to practice and tell you what they are ACTUALLY doing. Or when the kid and parent each give you a different excuse. Ugh...

My CP rarely misses practice and the only ones she has ever missed have been for mandatory school functions and when she was sick (in the past 9 years). I could probably count the times on one hand that she has missed. That being said, I totally and completely disagree with whoever said if you are throwing up, bring a bucket. I will NOT make my daughter go to a cheer practice when she is throwing up and I would be LIVID if another child was sitting there throwing up in a bucket. I am her parent, and being her parent trumps a coach who "requires" my sick daughter to be there. Now, I realize that several kids/parents will just say they are that sick, but my thought is, the coaches know my CP pretty well and know she is always at practice. So, if I am calling you saying she is too sick to be there, then she is too sick to be there.

I got the "bring a bucket" line before. But my coach never actually made a puking athlete come to practice. I think it was more of an exaggeration that you have to be at practice and that a little head cold isn't enough to justify an absence.

As a coach I never told an athlete to "bring a bucket." I can deal with 1 athlete missing 1 practice from the stomach bug. What I can't deal with is the rest of the team getting sick because I made someone "bring a bucket."
ETA - luckily none of the kids/parents took took advantage of this as an easy excuse.

Ok, so this doesnt have to do with missing practice or anything, but it does have to do with the buckets! Around 2006, I was on youth 2 at a gym that will remain unnamed. The senior coed 5 team there was really really good and practiced all the time. Well, we had just gotten back from a competition and they hadnt done so well. They dropped 2 stunts I think and had gotten 2nd place. The coach was not too happy about that, so Monday night he brought in all of the trashcans he could get his hands on and conditioned the senior 5 team until they were all puking in the trashcans. x.x I'm all for strict coaching and everything but... this just seems too far.

ALSO, my team has had SO many injuries during practice this year, we all have pain pills in our bags and our gym owner keeps some at the front desk. If you feel the pain comin', take some pills and get back on the floor. :p

A little off topic, but I ended up getting sick at one practice so I managed to run outside and was throwing up in the bushes outside the door and a parent literally just walked by and went into the gym like it was completely normal to see someone outside throwing up.

At my high school, apparently the pom coach tells the girls that if they aren't throwing up, they aren't working hard enough, and then lines trash cans up in front of where they practice.
