I've said this before but wanted to take this opportunity: as an employer, we google and social media search every person prior to even conducting an interview.

If you have pictures showing illegal activities, we will likely not even schedule you.

The internet never forgets and many decisions you make will impact your life in ways you can't imagine.

At my school, if a picture of you drinking is sent to the school and it is proven to be a true, real picture (people have sent fakes before, pathetic, i know) then you are suspended from that sport for the season. If a coach sees the picture, they have to report it to the administration. Easy way to avoid this, dont tag yourself/untag if tagged, make your pictures private, don't allow these pictures to be taken/posted!

Or just dont do it at all. It will solve the problem!

It really depends on the situation. First off, how old the person is. Then what kind of picture it is. And last how often it happens. If it happens like every weekend it might be a problem. One time... maybe not.

You can also discuss it both ways, I've seen many coaches with not-so-nice-pictures on Facebook. Coaches should make a good example for the kids.

Are you people ACTUALLY serious that you would kick a team member off for drinking or doing drugs?
I can see if they are in the uniform or at a competition or something along those lines that there will be penalties, and if that leads to their removal from the team, then so be it, but to kick someone off because you found out they drank? Seriously? We're teenagers. Whether someone's a cheerleader or not, they're likely to experiment with alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc. and to punish them for something you most likely did at their age when it has NOTHING to do with the gym is absolutely stupid, and if I were an athlete there I'd leave the gym as soon as I found out about that policy. It's not just because of the drinking thing. If something I do has no relation AT ALL to my gym, that is my business and NOT the gym's.
Putting them on Facebook is the same thing. If they are not representing the gym in any way in that picture, I say they can keep it up. It's a reflection on themselves, not the gym. I think most people over think how much someone will look into a picture. If I see a picture of a drunk girl on Facebook, I don't look at her Facebook, find out where she works, and assume that that place is a terrible place because she's drunk and works there.

Drinking under the age of 21 is ILLEGAL, doing drugs at any age is ILLEGAL..... I believe most gym policy's include that if anyone is caught doing anything illegal there are consequences, you know like when you are caught by the nice police officer when he halls you butt off...I really don't think they care to hear oh I am a teenager and I am experimating.

I just don't understand how it's any of their business unless you've acquired a criminal record from it...

I completely agree.. I know my gym has a policy about this when we are they're responsibility (at competitions), but I feel like this has nothing to do with the gym, so they should stay out of it. My cheer gym has no right to police my life outside of the gym

The law is STILL catching up to the social media concept. What REALLY is private/public? You can be arrested for doing something in the privacy of your own home (like hosting a party with alcohol if you're underage)..Is it still private if you post it publicly for all to see? Are my thoughts private if I post them on facebook? The world can see them/access them, does that still count as private if they originated from my home computer? What about a text message I sent from starbucks? I'm in a public place on my 'private' device. For my job, if I post anything negative about the company on facebook/twitter/google+ etc and they see it (no, I'm not friends with my managers on fbook or anything, but if they happen to google search me and see), I can be terminated without complaint. I signed paperwork on it.

Just because they have no right to police what you do outside the gym, doesn't mean they don't have the right to decide you're not the type of customer they want..it's their choice to decide that your actions don't reflect well on the gym's image. And frankly- I drank in HS. I just wasn't dumb enough to get caught. If you are, or are dumb enough to post pictures of yourself, you deserve all the punishment the world can bestow upon you. They used to call that natural selection..

Same here, in the financial industry, we check. It is considered 'character screening'.

My daughter-in-law is a teacher who moves frequently with my son's career progression. In every location across the country where she has applied, the hiring school both checks the current Facebook and searchs the internet for old information.

It may not seem important today, but when you start your career and are one of 150-250 candidates applying for the same job (the one YOU want), you may have some regrets.

I just don't understand why someone would post pictures of themselves doing illegal things!

I feel, however, if my coaches have the time to look through my entire facebook profile in order to make sure I don't have any of such pictures posted, then I would be happy for them to kick me off. I could find another gym where I wasn't being checked up on by someone other than my parents. (This is theoretical though, I love my gym, I'm not friends with my coaches on facebook and I don't have any pictures posted of me doing illegal things)

If they do not want it inside their gym they have the right to not allow it inside of their gym. Just like a company can refuse to even interview you based on what they see on your social networking profiles.

I will admit that I drank underage, was it stupid though? YES and having younger family members in high school and college I now look at it compeletely different then I did when I was their age. It is just stupid to begin with, but if you do it and then think it is cool to post the pictures on facebook then you are a straight up IDIOT and you deserve any concequence that comes with it.

If I owned a gym and found the pictures then they would not be cheering in my gym, especially if the pictures are taken at competitions. Those are the pictures that bother me the most, the pictures from NCA or Worlds that have half the team drinking. I am sure that the EP would love to know that their money was spent to send you to FL for free to get wasted. If you can't handle a weekend without drinking you need to seek help. This goes for college nationals as well, a good chunk of them are not 21 yet still post the drunk pictures on facebook. People need to start using their brains when using the internet.
