For those of you who say raising the "Open" age to 17 is good because of all the attention drawn to questionable interactions between adults and children in cheer... how many of those questionable situations were actually between athletes on the same team?

The older athletes are still going to be in the gym with the little ones, still going to the same competitions, still sharing all that time and space... In fact, a lot of older, open-aged athletes are coaches at their gym!! If this is actually a problem, then this is not an appropriate solution.

"So soooo sad about what happened today in Cheerleading. I Love Cheerleading soooooo much and don´t understand why the people who run our sport would do this to us kids who are the future of our Sport. I really LOVE tumbling and Cheer and strongly disagree with this decision and hope it will change back to way it was before today."- Laney Madsen
Out of the mouth of a fierce 11 year old... just so sad :(

It isn't THE solution but it can still cut down on questionable situations. IMO if having a 12 year old on a team with 18 year olds is questionable then a 14 year old on a team with others in their 20s is just as questionable. If the team had no one over the age of 19 or 20 then sure it wouldn't be a big deal, but I would say the majority of Open teams have athletes older then that on them.

So a mandate has been given to us that has basically removed Restricted 5 as a division, and taken the US out of all International divisions, but we can't stop gyms from using overage athletes and give Bangkok a globe when they use too many boys and have more illegalities than most of us can count.

Our kids must show up competition ready, their bows and makeup can't be distracting and the boys had better not be flamboyant, but it's ok for teams to drop levels, or create "ringer" teams to win a jacket.

Can't show too much skin cause it creates a bad image, but inconsistent judging and lack of a universal scoresheet is ok.

Yup...these changes are exactly what will get us considered a sport

DISBAND THE USASF NOW!!!! IT'S TIME FOR NEW LEADERSHIP!!!!

Times are changing. 14 year olds are now discussing stuff 18 year olds do. 14 year olds are smoking weed, doing drugs, having sex, and cussing like its no ones business. a 9 year old will be exposed to stuff on a Junior team just as they would a Senior team.

I understand where it comes from and what it's hoping to resolve. I just think that instead of fulfilling its intention (minimizing the potential for inappropriate things), it penalizes a lot of smaller gyms and international gyms.

My point is that there will still be opportunities for people (who want to) to generate these situations. Why aren't we calling for background checks on ALL adults who work or train with children?

(Also, please consider that you could put a 4 year-old athlete on a Junior team with 14 year-olds... if the age gap is the problem, they are not fixing it.)

I'm prob gonna get attacked but hey what's new, but shouldn't IOC and IO be teams for adults? I have no problem with that age being raised. Ages 3-18 should be put on "club" aged teams and 18+ should be for "Open" teams. Again, I'm not AT ALL for the WAY these rules were released but I agree with this one, HOWEVER I think that like with ALL rules, if there is going to be a change like this there should be a progression, start with 15 then 16 then 17, jumping from 14-17 in one year is drastic.

I don't know yet about the rules changes.

But I have to admit that I'm in love with the image policy! Those uniforms that look more like someone is going to the beach than being an athlete on a stage. Those choreographies going with it where some people watching the routine must ask themselves where they are - at a sports competition or in a strip club. Those uniform malfunctions. All those uniforms where the only option is a strapless bra, if there is even an option for wearing a bra at all with all those crazy cutouts...

Actually most of the uniforms in the "new uniforms" thread for this season that most people complained about how they make our sport not look like a sport at all, but more like a fashion show (if even) .... most of those uniforms have to be gone when those rules finally are implemented!

I can debate about the full-top except for senior teams, but for everything else: Thank You!

TOTALLY disagree! I think they are super cute in the tops ... these girls sweat in the gym 6 days a week, and if they want to show their skills on the mat, while looking totally cute ... that is what it is all about. A sport where a girly girl can kick butt. The best of both worlds! Taking that away is ridiculous! the strap rule is fine, the skirt length rule is fine, but just saying NO to tops that are shorter is crazy. Maybe a length would be a better way to go, so people still have the option to feel most comfortable while performing. I know my daughter much prefers cheering in the short tops, and she even practices in them. Second point to that, it is MORE dangerous to practice in a t-shirt, than a small top.

You reminded me of a good point I had earlier...One of the reasons I love Allstar for my daughter and plan to keep her in it as long as she wants is BC I want her involvement in other "extracurricular" activities to be kept to a bare minimum if you know what I mean?! Hearing people talking about those things versus actually being in an environment that promotes them (parties, dating, etc.) is a much preferable option to me. As the sport is right now, I'd still rather my child be doing cheer every weekend regardless of the music, makeup, dancing, and uniforms deemed "inappropriate" by the USASF.

I agree 100%. When the thread on the rumor of 13 being the new age for world started I commented on liking the idea of the IOC/IO5 divisions moving to maybe 15 or 16 because I feel that eventually those divisions need to be for adults who can no longer cheer in the club divisions. People have complained that senior teams are putting 12 year olds in stunts and that it is unfair at times, but what about a 25 year old putting up a 14 year old in a stunt, isn't that the same problem? I just see absolutely no reason for a 14 year old to be on the same team as someone in their 20s just like others don't think a 12 year old has any business being on the same team as an 18 year old.

Its better to show her belly on a competition stage in a cheerleading uniform competing, than in some random boys house partying...
