Of course level 3 teams go to NCA... I don't quite get your point. Lower levels compete at big competitions, eg Cheersport, NCA, The Summit... not being facetious I genuinely don't understand what you mean.

I was thinking she meant that because NCA doesn't allow level crossovers...often lower level teams (where many crossovers come from higher level teams) often do not attend/compete. Of course, in some cases, the stacked lower level team does attend and the higher level team "stays home"

Ah, gotcha. That makes sense!

But i thought NCA and summit have strict rules on not allowing crossovers. I could be wrong I have no idea.

NCA does (hallelujah), but Summit you can have an entire level 5 team cross to level 1. The only crossover restriction is no more than 5 athletes can compete on one Summit team if they competed at Worlds (but that team could be level 1).

Varsity tweeted out something about changes to Summit after a big meeting. I asked if there were any changes to the Summit crossover rules. Whomever it was wrote me and said that they are still only allowing the 5 athlete crossover rule. I then asked, what about restricting how many levels an athlete can go up or down. No answer...

Sadly it is all tied to the all mighty dollar. Crossovers are very profitable to EPs.

You know I really got to thinking about all this crossover controversy and wondering...are there other sports (or non sports) out there that have any sort of crossover rules? I mean, heck, look at the Olympics...If USA wants to put Michael Phelps on the 4x200 Medley relay AND the 4x200 Free relay...it's totally allowable. Sure having someone with so much crazy talent on BOTH teams is going to mean the "little guys" who don't have the deep talent pool the USA does, stand a much tougher chance of winning either the Medley or Free relay...but that's the way it is. Not everybody gets a trophy (or Olympic gold) in life and some people get more than one!

And as far as "crossing down"... If that Olympic relay team all were members of the same college team or club team, they could totally compete at that level and likely blow away their competition! It's allowable! Would it be as prestigious of a victory to them (having won Olympic gold already)? I would doubt it...but they could still do it and set some pretty amazing records too!

Just playing devil's advocate on this topic. As a parent I have allowed my CP to cross over some seasons and others I have said "no" (primarily for concern about overuse injuries and/or life balance). I know this is a hot topic in the cheer world and I totally understand where the frustration comes from on both sides of the issue.

But what other team sport has levels with a list certain skills with in that level???? Can't think of one.

Most youth sports I can think of have levels within each age group that progress from a lower skill level to an elite level. And even within each team different kids have different positions just like cheer.

We like to separate cheer from other sports to justify some of our decisions but it really isn't all that different.

Olympics are considered the most elite competition. I would compare it to Worlds in this example. There are what we consider "mega gyms" at Worlds or teams that consistently win that you could compare the USA or Russia, Romania, China etc to as far as being the best of the best in gymnastics, for example. And there are teams at Worlds that are on a completely different "level" from those highly competitive level 5 gyms and they probably will never make it to finals, such as a country that would never even qualify for Finals at the Olympics. There is nothing wrong with consistently strong countries at the Olympics competing against weak countries just as there is nothing wrong with consistently strong teams at Worlds competing against weaker teams - they are still all competing at the same level.
However, you won't see Michael Phelps competing in the Bay State Games or a lower type level swim event, nor will you see Aly Raisman compete level 6 at a gymnastic event. I think that is the issue many of us are tired of seeing and wish USASF would make some restrictions because it happens in cheer on a regular basis.

I would consider it more like Michael Phelps competing in the Olympics and also in the NCAA Championships. Still legal (as long as the athlete is still an amateur, which he wasn't but you get the idea) but still frustrating for the other competitors that he should have no trouble beating. He is on a different level than they are.

Or to the gymnastics levels. I don't pretend to be a gymnastics expert, but my understanding is once you enter elite level you only compete against other elites. Elite gymnasts would clean up competing level 7 or 8.

I'm not cursing crossovers here, I understand sometimes they are necessary. I'm just making a comparison that makes more sense in my mind.

I see your point but in my eyes that would be like a level 5 athlete at worlds crossing to a level 5 restricted at Summit, not the worst ever but still not totally desirable. Having an Olympic gymnast drop down to a lower level (say level 7 or 8? - a lower Optional level) would be like a worlds or junior level 5 athletes dropping down to a level 3 or 2.
