Also tanning is not limited to cheer? Like I have a lot of friends who tan because they don't like being pale, and don't cheer. At least the girls doing it so they don't glow have a reason for it.

When we went to camp we were DEMANDED to make sure we looked cute, some did go as far to tan. I was one the whitest people there because I chose not to tan or wear super dark makeup. Some of our girls looked orange so I'd much rather be white than orange

I am just astounded to hear tanning could impact positions in a routine at such a successful program. Has anyone asked of this in the rumor thread?

I have no idea. For us, it wasn't a rumor. I was told flat out.
eta I have the feeling others didn't know we were told that. Most kids just went and got sprayed. Some chose not to. Like I've said, we didn't like the new direction so we left. It was a personal choice.

Because saying "well Suzie *likes* wearing all that makeup and doing her hair, so why can't we just let her do it" is overly simplistic. I don't get a choice. I'm told I have to wear red lips and a heavy smoky eye. That I need to curl and tease my hair, the bigger the better. That it's okay to be pale at competitions in New England because it's winter, but I better get a tan for Worlds. I don't like doing any of those things, I never wear heavy makeup (red lips on me are just awful) or curl my hair, but now they've become the norm and part of the uniform.

wow no choice. Idk how I feel about that. But my point was not that Suzie had a choice (didn't know some don't) but that if its not part of the score sheet then how much makeup some wears shouldn't matter if its be scored. Do I agree that ton of makeup to compete? No. I too think there's a middle. I rarely wear makeup either, but if was for a few days then I wouldn't mind. I'm also kind of lazy about it and like to take care of my skin and hair. I don't color my hair.

I had some kids get into the spray tan thing a couple of years ago. I wasn't a fan at all. Every one of them looked like little orange Oompa Loompas. I don't think my teams look bad without the spray tans. We don't have anyone glowing but if I lined my kids up by skin color they would cover the entire spectrum of very white to peach to beige to mocha to black.

Am I just too focused on the skills and action to notice their coloring? Serious question...

Nope. I will say- when talking about teams during worlds chat, we were commenting much LESS (if at all) on those who were lighter, versus the serious overage of comments on those who had gone too far. I'm too busy counting skills, but it's the orange ones who distract me more than anything..

You don't notice the pale ones on videos as much I've realized (unless the white balance on a camera is WAY off- in which case any time you get a source of light going the whole video is a wash). The camera is MUCH more unforgiving on the Oompas/fake bakers. Spray versus lotion versus bed, I have no idea if it matters. Maybe it's my computer/tv.

I find it hilarious that some people feel like if we aren't full-on 10 ft poof, eyeliner, bold lips, tanned like leather it means we hate the sport and the world and want everyone to look frumpy with raggedy spaghetti hair and zombie makeup.

For example: I'm a waitress in NYC. Some days I go to work with nothing more than concealer on my under eyes (I have darker circles). Some days I go to work with full-on eye shadow, lip stuff, and the rest of the kit and caboodle (although those are usually days where I've had an audition lol). Nothing changes- I'm still at my job. I'm still working with some people who are pretty horrible human beings, and I still have people who don't grasp the concept of tipping. The world doesn't shift off it's access from a bit more mascara- I'm not that special lol.

I don't think people who are against full on make or how it is today hate the sport. I think it's more wanting to change it. I understand wanting to do that. I also took those other post you've mentioned as not understanding why its needed to make everyone believe its a sport and only by changing the look of someone's makeup/hair. back in the day lol when people wore little to no makeup and little bow outsiders still thought it was not a sport. I'm one of those outsiders (fan of cheer) and I can see past the makeup and see the skill. I actually watch the skills/routine rather than just noticing someone's orange tan and Smokey eyes.

It's very real. I subconsciously feel the need to spray before competition...and I'm a coach. I also sprayed before college camp and UCA Nationals because I felt like I had to. Doesn't mean everyone did, but I certainly felt that it was necessary.

When my CP was still competing, she was told by coaches to go and tan (tanning booth, spray tans weren't around here then). I refused to allow her to. She was harassed by her coaches for not doing it but oh well, my CP's health is more important.

Where I live now has a law making it illegal to allow a minor to tan or to market tanning to minors. I wonder if spray tanning will eventually be found to also be harmful, especially to children. My child still doesn't tan...booth, spray, or the sun. She is very conscientious of wanting her skin to be as healthy as possible and doesn't mind always being the whitest person in the room!

Sorta off topic, but the pale shaming doesn't surprise me.

I went through it in HS and even though it wasn't demanded for my dance team...it was 'highly' suggested and this was over 10 years ago.

Oh....well I'm black....so I don't really notice pale or not pale. Tanning wasn't big when I was cheering....or if it was I was left out of the conversation because I need not apply.

Actually I think they called it laying out and sometimes they'd be like "Erin do you want to lay out" and I was like "no"

Although colorism does exist in black culture....

Yeah, my sister's in-laws are black and I've noticed colorism being around them.

Growing up in FL, where everyone expects you to be tan and you're just not, kinda sucked. I'm a burner---burn, peel, white...no tanning ever helped and spray tan was not in just yet.

I hope to see the tanning fade away since CP has my tone and she doesn't tan naturally.
