Summit Bid J5 Question...

Since I was accused of Gossiping earlier in the thread:

THis is the "change" I was speaking of... but who the info came from, I was not supposed to tell. Now, I was also told that this would mean Y5 will compete Friday and Sunday, with saturday off, but that was speculation, I think.

I am waiting to hear back if that is true. And the details: Will all those who accept pass on to finals? WIll they say the top half advances? Do they really have Saturday off? Those are my questions.... hopefully, the Sat off thing is true.

I don't want to argue semantics, but I never accused your information as being gossip...it's the coming it to a thread like this and saying you have a secret that you can't possibly share that is gossipy. If you shared the actual information (understanding that as an employee of Varsity you cannot) or said NOTHING and waited for the new information to be announced, it wouldn't have been an instance of gossip.

I definitely was told this in a Parent meeting 2 weeks ago, but we signed away the soul of our firstborn not to say or speak of it until an official announcement was made by Varsity... Now, I am wondering how a WC bid will work in this situation too. Do the teams compete Friday and the top 2 move straight to finals on Sunday... Then these 6 teams perhaps move on to prelims on Saturday and the top 2 or 3 move on to finals...Exactly how will this work, ummm???

What? So any Y5 team that has already competed at a Varsity event this season is automatically receiving a Wild Card Bid to the Summit? What is the reasoning behind it? To try to make the Wild Card Bid more attractive or something? It doesn't make sense to me. Why Y5? Why not Y2 or any Y level for that matter?

The youth 5 list is short. There aren't that many youth 5 teams to begin with. They need to offer some comp. for the Youth 5 teams that are going.

The Y4 list isn't much longer than the Y5 list. I was just looking at the Summit Bids Awarded page on the Varsity site. The only Y5 teams listed there are all on Wild Card Bids. So that means Varsity has decided to just hand bids to an entire division. Why? Is the Y5 division more important than any of the others?

Before they gave them the free WildCards I think only one youth 5 team was listed. Which means they wouldn't have had anyone to compete against. At the same time I see your point. Honestly, if other youth teams requested wild cards I can see them agreeing to it. In the end it is more money for them.

There were no Youth 5 bids before this weekend. We heard word that Stingrays got one handed down to them on Sunday, but never ward for sure. There was one Youth 4, I think.

Totally biased, but I am glad they did it (even though I would prefer not to pay for comp fees). I am encouraged that your gym has even talked about it, @pebbles49 !! Hope you guys make it down, too.

As of this last Monday there were no Y4 teams with bids of any kind. There still aren't any. CP is going to the Summit with her SR5 team but her Y4 team doesn't have a bid of any kind. Those girls have busted their tails and they are competing with all the other level 4 teams for bids to the summit. They aren't eligible for Wild Card Bids because they are youth. I'm old enough to know that life isn't fair but I'm calling this for what it is. Completely unreasonable for Varsity to change the rules in the middle of the season. This is our fourth year in cheer and our second year with a gym that participates in the large, D1 type competition circuit. Twice this year Varsity has changed the rules during the season. I am a huge supporter of all the levels and age groups. This action by Varsity to just hand out Wild Card Bids to an entire division is more than enough to make me pause and consider the worth of the Summit as a championship competition for the hand picked Y5 division. I knew that SOH had stated they would not award any bids to Y teams two weeks prior to that event. I was not aware of anything of that nature with Cheersport Nationals so I'm assuming the Y teams were eligible at that competition. Maybe there were Y teams at SOH with scores high enough to have earned a bid there. If so then they should have been awarded them. Talk about a snub to levels other than level 5? Every division except for Y5 has to compete against all the other age divisions for the opportunity to compete at the Summit but Y5 has been handed a free pass? Because there aren't that many Y5 teams?
I'm not implying that Y5 athletes aren't hard working and they certainly have some amazing talent or they wouldn't be at that level at a youth age. I enjoy watching them immensely. Shout out to all the Y5 athletes! I would never intentionally say (or type) something to take away from what those athletes are accomplishing.

I understand that. In fact, until this weekend only 1 youth 3 (PCM) had a bid-- that is CPs other division. I understand this was done to announce a change for next year. Maybe to entice more Y5 down to the Summit?? (We only had 3 teams last year, and two of those are no longer in Y5).

Does anyone know how many were there for youth 4? I know it is a small division too.

I understand the struggle, and wish your CP luck! I know we are still after a bid for youth 3!

IMO the whole WC bid situation is ridiculous. At the J5 level only one WC bid was awarded, so who are they competing against to get into Saturday's competition.

Summit bids on the website as of 2/20-
Small J5- 4 AL teams
LG j5- 2 AL teams
Small JC5- 2 paid, 4 at large
Large JC5- 1 paid, 2 at large and one WC

CPs gym doesn't go to the Summit so it doesn't effect me directly but we have a lot of friends trying for bids. I am sure they would like a "free bid" as well.

It is a hot debate that's popped up more than once on here. I coach level 1 and have seen it all. If they are truely maxed out at their level and doing "hard" level 1 skills, it should be the same as a "hard" level 5 routine. Guess we just agree to disagree :)

I agree with the fact that someone new to level 1 vs new to level 5 are going to find their particular level skill sets equally difficult. What i do believe, though, is that you can't sandbag level 5, you can stack lower level teams making it easier for that team to achieve a higher percent of perfection. Also, deduction wise, a LOT more can go wrong with all the moving parts of a tick tick full around than a thigh stand heel stretch. More people are involved, more moving parts, more chance of a deduction. Typically, a level 5 routine will move much faster as well, so to get that clean look it's harder no matter the skill set because of more moving parts. It's not just about tumbling and working hard. There are more variables and movement in a level 5 routine than in level 1.

At the inaugural summit my daughters J5 was combined with coed due to lack of teams
