I know a lady that went in for a neck adjustment and died but it is rare. I get my back adjusted but not my neck- I'm just paranoid though. When you go in for any procedure they tell you of all the risk even if the chances are low. When I got an injection in my back they warned of death- but I'm all good now

That is scary!

This probably sounds like an odd question, but is Chiari Malformation associated with hair thining or hair loss?

I don't know much about it. Can I ask why?

My personal bias comes from the fact that they can cause what killed my father. He died from carotid artery dissection. His was spontaneous and not related to an adjustment. It caused a stroke and he died. Most CAD's are caused by trauma to the neck, which includes chiropractic care. A husband of a close friend of mine had an an adjustment. 20 mins later he had a CAD and stroked. There are so many other things that can be done instead of adjustments. A temporary fix doesn't solve the problem. Like I said, I have a biased opinion though.

Definitely push for the MRI. I suffered from migraines all of my life and went to a ton of docs and even a neurologist who just told me they were tension headaches. I ended up seeing a chiropractor 3 times a week but they weren't getting better so he sent me for an MRI. that MRI report stated that i might have a Chiari Malformation and i should get a brain MRI. I got the brain MRI and it was confirmed that I had Chiari Malformation. Chairi is a rare brain disorder where your brain herniates through the base of your skull into your neck area. It is not life threatening but very uncomfortable. I had brain surgery 3 years ago to try to "free up" space in the base of my skull so the base of my brain wasn't being squeezed so much and also currently take Celebrex daily to help with the neck pain. If your daughter's headaches start in the back of her head this could be the cause. Daily i feel like someone has hit me in the back of the head with a baseball bat. I am used to it now, lol, it's just kind of normal for me. But i wished i had pushed the docs, neurologists, etc. who just kept telling me they were tension headaches. I am thankful my chiropractor thought to get the MRI and I owe it all to him!

My CP is 7 and just started complaining about headaches and she said they were in the back of her head. I tried not to freak out (because Chiari can be hereditary) but they became so frequent that i ended up taking her to the DR and told them i wanted a MRI because of my history. we did get the MRI and thankfully she doesn't have Chiari but you have to be the advocate for your child. I know sometimes as parents we don't want to over react, but it seems like you have been asking why she is getting these headaches and nothing is working. It may be time to push.

Good luck!

@mybabywantstotumble Yikes, I have had a friend who had this and day to day life was just a paintful experience. I don't know where you live, but for what it's worth, we lived closer (800 ft) to sea level. She learned that living at a higher elevation helped her head.

When I get them really bad, I go to the Chiropractor, I usually walk out with it gone

I'm going to second this one, and I'm a person that was very anti-chiropractor in the past. I have severe migraines that are related to neck pain, right at the top of the neck/base of my head. I get knots in the muscles in my neck that literally make an audible crunching sound when they are worked on, but massage and trigger point therapy at the chiropractor has helped trememdously in reducing the frequency and severity of the migraines.

I have had migraines for years and lights for sure can set them off. I take topamax every day to lower the frequency of migraines I get (the dosage your daughter takes may need to be adjusted if it doesnt work right away). When I do get a migraine I take a mixture of Imetrex and naproxen (at the same time). The combo works perfectly together. Best of luck!

Do you know that they actually make a pill that is mixture of imitrex and naproxen? It is called Treximet and I SWEAR by it.
From personal experience I would suggest being very careful with Topamax, I was taking it for almost two years, the doc kept upping my dose because it wasn't totally fixing my headaches. I was up to 200 mg a day. It can totally mess with you, the room would randomly start spinning, I wouldn't be able to pronounce certain words, weird things that the doc kept saying was migraines presenting themselves in different forms. As soon as I went to the new nuerologist the first hing he did was to wean me off of the topamax, he said he has seen it do really weird things to people. He had one patient on it that couldn't say certain things, like when they asked for her phone number she said it was "555-14....uh, the number that comes after 7.....4"

my personal experience with migraines, stress is the trigger. its also the trigger to me breaking out but anyway.. i take imitrex and it works like magic. but i think you have to be of a certain age to get prescribed.

I agree with what acedad said about making the coach aware.
Hopefully it stops soon. I get some nasty migraines also.
I just drink a ton of water.

Update, we saw a pediatric neurologist at Dell Childrens Hospital in Austin. Although they did not do a cat scan, MRI, or any extensive test they did switch her medicine to topamax topiramate for preventative & Maxalt for treatment. So far, it seems to be helping. We are keeping our fingers crossed. She has gone 5 days in a row without a migraine. This is the longest she has gone without a migraine since she was 6 years old!!!!!! :)

I get the same type of migraines that your daughter gets, mine are caused by allergies to several types of food and mold, mildew and house dust. That could be one reason why shes getting migraines, maybe she has an allergy to dust and there is a lot in the gym. Just an option, glad that to topamax is working! Migraines are the worst!

Thanks, our gym use to be in a different building. In Feb. it moved to a new building (built & designed just for the cheer gym). It is awesome! She had migraines in both buildings. She even has migraines when the gym is closed for breaks. So, I don't think it is related to the building.

It might be food related then. I met a girl who suffered from migranes so she cut different foods out of her diet, her migranes stopped when she stopped eating chocolate.

My oldest daughter struggles with sever migraines. It effects her vision, she usually throws up, and ends up crying her self to sleep. We have been to the Doctors, tried different medicines, tried changing her diet (avoiding msg, etc.), and so far nothing has helped. I have noticed she tends to get them really bad / seems to be a trigger when she side bases. She loves cheer & isn't about to give it up. She is definitely needed as a side baser. Switching to a flyer or back spot is not an option or appropriate for her. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to prevent them? P.S. She does get them even when it is her off days. So, quiting cheer would not solve the problem. I have just noticed, she is almost guaranteed to get a severe one when she spends the majority of the time side basing during a practice. She says they start in her neck and move to the middle of her forehead very quickly.

I didn't read this whole thread so forgive me if this has already been suggested.

My cp has suffered with severe migraines for years. We had tried what I thought was everything. I then took her to a new chiropractor and the migraines are basically gone! Took about 6 or 7 appts with the doctor giving her chiropractic care, massage, and accupunture. The combination worked!! The doctor I took to her came highly recommended by others, including our local triple A hockey team which uses his care regularly. He specializes in athletes and understood what she meant when she explained the issues that would happen at cheer.

Hope this helps :)
