I agree with a huge majority of this and didn't want to repeat it all. (Coming from a coach) As a parent, I would be paying for coaches that I can trust not just from a safety and reliability aspect, but also those who are going to guide my CP as a positive role model. We all know that cheer...
I had a girl I coach last year drive to the wrong city for a competition :( Last comp of the year. We had to rework the whole show in warmups. Girl shows up as we're leaving the last warmup mat and wants to compete...sorry hun :( Mom was furious. It was a nightmare and honestly a horrible...
ps... @kingston I meant to tell you I emailed @cheersafety after we talked but did not hear back. I know I can get very behind in emails and hoping it was the same type situation. I DO hope to be able to work with some folks down the line to continue to change the sport for the benefit of all!
I've got to disagree with this here. @kingston 's not talking about limiting HS only. it's just that through regualation with USASF comps and USASF coach's credentialing, all star already has "limits" in place that just don't exist at the school level..for a whole myriad of reasons. the injury...
The conversation had previously examined the role of all star cheerleaders who also cross over into school cheer, thus the risk of injuring themself while either competing/cheering for their school or the different methods of skill execution on spring vs. hard floor by athletes who compete on...
@laughAlittle...for the sake of the thread, I'm curious about your proposals to improve the safety conditions regardless of hard/spring floor. just to keep things on track ;)
I'd argue that we'd all like to see the injuries reduced...but best of methods is far from being determined.
I thought about it over lunch and I'll devils advocate you. While you are correct about the hard floor, with the emergence of Stunt, etc. cheerleaders are competing on safer floors with those instances. So I guess there is a small bit of variability. I don't see the elimination of...
I love devils advocate arguments as it means the entre picture is being reviewed for the benefit of all. What you bring up is definitiely another question to look into....(which ties into ensuring proper safety/progressions)
Sarah thanks for correcting me on the numbers, I appreciate you double checking that. There are several main hurdles I've identified, the number one being administration/you can't enforce this type of regulation. Admins at schools aren't going to want to pay for any type of certifications nor...
I believe when I was researching on Friday I saw 4 coaches listed as AACCA certified in Ohio. That is a bare minimum compared to the number of schools in the state.
well I do see there is the AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Administrators) but I see that most of the regulations are what we would find in a standard first set of comp rules prior to looking at level info (ie. no jewelry, no gum, wear safe shoes, etc). The National...
I absolutely agree and will give you one more. I've seen very inexperienced high schoolers attempt level 1-3 skills because "they do it at their all star gym." This does not in any way mean that they know how to execute it properly and often due to lack of coaching experience, a huge risk...
@kingston - you've got me thoroughly intrigued with all of your safety postings. I didn't know if you are doing research before taking some type of action but I was curious to know what your "next steps" if any are. this is brought on by a) previously mentioned safety posts and b) my mom...
I was suprised at the reference in difference between 2.5 and 3 meters....I think at that point the difference would be minimal given the lack of mat and lack of catching by the bases.
I enjoyed the first article on cheer safety. While I believe it is important for parents to not try to coach...
I say carrots as well. I never really was a fan of "if you don't hit, you'll do x." Kind of a fearful motivation...not really the best. However, if a team is a hot mess all practice, then yes, if they don't hit at the end of a show we'd say..do laps or conditioning or whatever. But never as...
