I don't follow too much gymnastics, but why is she getting hate?

I'd assume its a little because she got her start in cheer and gymnasts aren't the warmest towards cheerleaders. Plus I believe she was invited to the National Team camp in TX without having ever competed - the first US gymnast to ever do that - so there's probably also some jealousy.

The fact that she's a former cheerleader, starting gymnastics so late so she does have some form issues. But it's unnecessary and she should be commended the amount of natural talent to improve so quickly especially on bars.

I watched a video of her floor routine from a meet in Ontario and her tumbling was quite scary. :help: But I can't believe how far she's come in such a short time. It'd be amazing to see her make the National Team though, considering her unconventional start to the sport.

I remember Laney and her family from way back when they were still living in Germany. We were at some of the canps they hosted with their german team. She was still a baby. Its crazy to see where she is now, but then again that family is such a hardworking bunch, it's unbelievable

I'm not 100% sure about this so someone correct me if I'm wrong but Laney was born in Germany her mum is Bolgarian and she lives in US. So she could compete for USA, Germany or Bolgaria. Competing for USA in Tokyo will be hard but she is talented enough to get a spot....but competing for Bulgaria will be easier if she doesn't make it. Did Bulgaria even had a gymnast in Rio?

Did her mom become a German citizen? They did away with the dual-citizenship for military kids born in Germany some time ago---she's about twice the age of my eldest, who was also born in Germany. If her mom didn't change her citizenship to give her access to a German claim, then she can't compete for Germany and would only have the US and Bulgaria as an option.

MyKayla Skinner may be going pro and competing for cash prizes on the world cup circuit. She'd also be paid for her participation in the Kellogg's tour.

My gut says it doesn't make a lot of sense, but she could carve out a nice living the next few years in Europe.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what is the World Cup series? I thought gymnasts who turned pro could only really make money through endorsements?

The World Cup series are just sets of competitions that have cash prizes. There's the American Cup, the Glasgow World Cup, the Stuttgart World Cup, and a bunch of other ones I believe. I'm not sure how much money you make from them though.

Skinner could probably make a decent amount from it I think. If she is aiming for 2020 as a specialist it would be a smart way to do it?

Since my video link never actually worked, and since I'm still obsessed

From what I understand, she is an American citizen who was born overseas as a military kid. I doubt she would have dual US/German citizenship, and I'm not sure about the specific Bulgarian rules for nationality. I know other countries only require that you have heritage from their country to compete for them. It would primarily be the US that people like Laney would compete for.
Plus I'm not sure how I feel about athletes competing for other nations to get a better chance of being on the team. Doesn't quite feel in the Olympic spirit, but that's just my opinion.

I could see Simone coming back but taking the Aly/Gabby route of a year or two off. Madison is starting UCLA in the fall. Aly is apparently playing around with coming back, but I'm skeptical so we'll see. Gabby will be done and Laurie is continuing.

Going to be interesting to see what the juniors can do with the addition of Laurie/Ashton/Ragan. I think I will definitely follow NCAA more closely now with some huge talent entering this fall!

If Aly's performances leading up to and at the Olympics are any indication, she will only be better. She will only be 26 at the 2020 Olympics. Maybe she will pull a "Chusovitina" :p

Well there's always Belarus... At least she has real ties to Bulgaria, I guess. Her technique has drastically improved from the days where her dad would post videos here and I'd have to close my eyes every landing on account of her knees... but she still has a long way to go to be up to speed with her competition for Team USA, IMO.

Why Gabby Douglas has been the target of so much unfair, petty criticism at the 2016 Olympics. I just want to hug her, honestly.

Also heard she already left Rio and will not be attending closing ceremonies with her team. I just hope it was because that's what she wanted and not because she wanted to avoid the spotlight which would inevitably lead to more criticism.

Yep, she roll bounced out of Rio yesterday after doing some sight seeing with her sisters

And while some of that article made me cringe, yeah at the end of the day it's because she's a black woman
