Was I the only one whose life just wasn't dramatically changed by the Fault in our Stars? iPhone || Android
I really dont understand the hype about the fault in our stars.

This is how I feel about most "trendy" books (with Gone Girl leading the pack... Uuuuuggghhhh I just can't stand that book. And I want to scream every time I see someone ask what they should read and inevitably the first person to comment chimes in with Gone Girl). I haven't read TFIOS because of this - I almost never end up liking super over-hyped books.

Here's my vent/question: why do people ask for book suggestions if they're just going to read Gone Girl, Fault in our stars, book thief, etc? Do you really need a suggestion then, considering you can't get 2 words into a book conversation without them coming up?

E X P A N D your reading. There are some really good books. There are some amazing books. There are popular books. These are not all the same thing. I suppose I should just be happy that people are reading anything, but I just don't get the popularity of some of these books.

The only reason I try to read YA novels is because it's my only shot at trying to understand the culture my peers follow. (I can't think of a better way to phrase that. Lol.) I hate most modern music (Beyoncé and Taylor Swift are my exceptions; hate if you want, but I've been a closet fan since middle school). I hate reality tv. I prefer to stay away from social media, because it's always the same nonsense, and it makes me worry about where society is going (that could just be the fault of the people I'm friends with though). But I do like reading, and I'll try anything once. I've never looked at it as romanticizing death though, that's an excellent point. And one that really makes me think.
About the Divergent series though, never has a series made me so angry. I liked the first two books, the third one was a little all over the place for me but I made myself finish it, and the end had me genuinely livid. I was in a bad mood the whole day. Didn't even go see the movie.
ETA: one of my only exceptions to my general dislike for pop culture actually is the Hunger Games. It could be because I read the first book when it first came out, back when I was in middle school/junior high, and followed it as the books released. I loved it long before the movies, but the movies haven't disappointed me either (for once).

I'm going to see Beyoncé in 5 days!

Anywho.

I read YA books because I'm a children's librarian that would much rather prefer to be a YA librarian.

I didn't read the entire Divergent series I read the first one because it was required of us since it was the "One Book" for the city/library system last fall. I didn't enjoy it

I didn't enjoy Hunger Games. I did enjoy Catching Fire. I put down Mockingjay over 2 years ago and never bothered to finish it.

Honestly if any of you guys want a "sad cancer book" I recommend A Time For Dancing by Davida Wills Hurwin (or Hurwin Wills). It's an older book (90s). I read it back in 8th grade when one of my own best friends was dying from Leukemia....and to me that book really shows what it's like to have a friend die of cancer.

Has anyone read If I Stay? It's a YA book that I didn't mind (I read it a long time ago though, so that could have something to do with it). They're making a movie out of it too, and I'm interested to see how it goes.

I had to read it in grad school. I remember liking it

I never read Where she went or whatever the sequel was called.

Haha, I loved Gone Girl! I read it without knowing what it was about and before it got super popular though. TFIOS is entertaining, but it's over-hyped. I liked it when I first read it, but it is not THAT great of a book.

Lately, I've been trying to re-read a lot of books that I had to read in high school. And then just whatever looks good at Barnes and Noble, haha

I hated Hunger Games. Maybe because I had to read it for one of my classes, but I didn't enjoy it at all. I'm just not into dystopian novels or anything that's not somewhat realistic.

I've read all of Ellen Hopkins YA novels and the one for adults. Those are super popular and I've never read one I didn't like.

Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors ever. A few of her books have been turned into Lifetime movies.

If anyone needs a recommendation for something good to read (that's not popular with the teens) then try Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. It's so good, especially if you like history.

Otherwise I love the Stephanie Plum serious by Janet Evanovich. Such an easy read but good. I can do like one book a day.

Loooove Jodi picoult. She covers so many difficult topics but manages to make her books realistic and not romanticized. I've never read one of hers that I didn't like.
It's been years but I'm still mad about the My Sister's Keeper movie.

I've found Jodi Picoult's books to all run together after a while. Not so much the topics but the general plots and endings. Same with Ellen Hopkins who I love, but am not enamored by all her novels.

I recently read The Bronze Horseman series by Paulina Simons and loved it.

I think I started crying the moment My Sister's Keeper started. Big mistake to watch that movie. I read the book; I knew it wasn't going to be a fun time.
