All-Star Division I And Division Ii At Worlds - Big Gym Separation

I went to public school and coached there a few years in high school. We were cheering at a basketball game against a local private school which wasn't technically a rivalry game but had that feel. The private school was right down the road and most of the kids were friends. One kid in our student section colored a big sign with a sloppily drawn stick figure man standing outside in the grass with the sun shining down from the corner. (Your basic toddler drawing that ends up on the fridge) The sign read "Hey (private school name), can I have an art scholarship too?"

I hate to admit that I laughed.
That's hysterical.

**would the real slim shady please stand up, please stand up**

After our school beat the private school (basketball) our cheerleaders were no longer allowed down on the floor during games with this team because this team deemed them "too distracting". (All boys school)
complete.ridiculousness!!!!
If I was the AD you can bet your booty the cheerleaders would be front and center during home games. No one should be able to make their own rules when they are in someone else's house.

What's crazy to me is how easy it is for the private schools in our area to get away with it! I have athletic friends who went to private schools who will openly admit they were recruited. They meet with the coach, get put on an "art scholarship" and they take one semester of art their freshman year and that's it. Then stay on the scholarship and play that sport all four years.

Yep! We had an all boys private school that destroyed everyone in baseball and football because they could recruit. Nobody liked playing them because we all knew it was bs. They were a 6A school too.

what's the big deal about this change? I'm friends with a few teammates from the all star world, and they have expressed to me that there was normally "no way" for a lot of the smaller programs to win worlds, and that's basically what this change is for. To give those for a smaller gym a chance to win worlds fairly. If that's true, why is it a problem?

I've read most of the comments here, and pretty much agree that this will probably be a "what division is better" rather than the actual logical meaning that stands behind this change. Isn't the is what all schools do? Separate by division? (1a, 2a, 3a, and 4a) so I don't get why this is an issue with the all star change if it is done correctly, and really built for the smaller gyms to have a chance to win worlds. Can someone please enlighten me? If this is done correctly I don't think the "what division is better" scenario will be that big of problem. Do small gyms think this is being done out so spite instead of trying to help them?

Put this in terms of D1 vs D2 college basketball. There are definitely some D2 schools that can hang with some D1 schools but when it comes down to championships and playoffs what division holds more prestige? Would you rather finish top 10 of all the best teams in the division or win the second tier?

A lot of it is personal opinion on it and the belief that not everyone should get a medal.

The other logistical issue is handing out bids between both divisions and how to prevent large programs from using loopholes to create small gyms just to enter the B division.

Laughing because I know exactly who you're talking about. Once upon a time we beat them and it was a HUGE deal

My best friend's high school got in trouble in 2004 for recruiting Canadians. They won the Class B hockey title. #Maine

ETA: A few towns in Maine lack public high schools, so they're in a contract with the private school in town. Every student from that specific town, regardless of family's income or intelligence, goes to the private school tuition free and is subsidized by the town/state. My friend's school was one of those schools. People not from that town have to pay if they want to go to school there, or be a boarding student.

Couldn't stand them [emoji19] beating them was better than winning state. I was told (not sure if it's true) that Liberty beat them once after I graduated which is impressive considering they beat us like 40-something to 0 my junior year [emoji28]

If we're even somewhat keeping up with them it's basically as good as a victory. Or in football if we even score... I think we beat them in either football or basketball my sophomore year and haven't since.

Well since the small gyms are always having problems with what USASF does, and that many small gyms have actually closed in the past, and in recent years because of some of USASF decisions wouldn't it make sense to work on building a Small Gym Federation, in the next six years or so, and make it clear as to what defines a small gym, and what forms of proof are required to have to enroll in the Small Gym Federation?

I know this is easier said than done, and probably sounds ridiculous to the more experienced people here, but to me personally it would make more sense, and it would be more feasible, but I know I'm probably wrong on so many levels!

Maybe it would make sense for a small gym federation of the criteria for small gyms is realistic and enforcement of those rules is taken seriously. To date the usasf hasn't been the greatest on enforcement as they don't want to tell gyms how to operate. It has been a while since I read up on this topic hopefully will get some time to refresh myself.

That (what's highlighted) sounds very unprofessional, and makes me cringe. What's the point of having a federation all together if they don't want to tell gyms how to operate, or don't enforce their rules all together? This is dangerous to our athletes on so many levels.

I think that USASF should be telling gyms how to operate in regards of hiring CERTIFIED coaches, safe, and adequate practicing areas, requiring insurance (yes, I've reported people who were teaching without insurance) I can go on forever about how awful that sounds. Why aren't rules being enforced, why is USASF afraid to take a stand to make this a safer sport?

This is Cheerleading, not Ping Pong. I seriously don't get it. There needs to be some type of enforcement, or people will always, and continue to take advantage of that, and continue to work around the rules in anyway they can.

It's not unprofessional for the governing body to allow us to run our businesses the way we see fit. You can get into some pretty gray areas of safety rules overlapping with ethics rules.

The USASF is taking steps to fix all of the above issues you listed with certifications and insurance but as yet there still isn't enough man power to enforce any and every rule we can think up sitting in the seat of the arm chair quarterback.

I don't think I would like a separate governing body for small programs at all but at least for now we do have the NSPA. NSPA National Small Program Association

It's legal for private schools to recruit and scholarship athletes here. They just have to be in a different division. A private school can cho No one tries to be sneaky or hide it.
