Only a guess since they weren't that popular when I was 16, but it could be because that's the age when most kids get their drivers license, which is kind of the first "big kid" thing a person does.
That is a part of it. It is typically considered the age when a teenager begins transitioning into an adult and also the age of consent in many states.

In the UK while 16 is nice it's the 18th birthday that is the biggest as it is the legal age for alcohol. Having said that mine was boring as no one showed up for various reasons apart from 2.

21 is the magic age for alcohol in most of the U.S. Might even be 21 for whole country but I can't recall for sure.

I am guessing the sweet 16 party is based on the French Debutante Ball where a girl was also presented as coming of age. Could be really wrong but that's a guess

Yeah for my family, 21 (drinking age) was a way bigger deal than me turning 16. I assume it'll be the same when my sister turns 21. However, that might be because I didn't get my license until I was 19 and my sister got hers when she was 17.

This thread is sooo... american.

Is it the only country doing the sweet 16 party thing? I looked it up on Wikipedia and they say it's quite popular in Canada too... probably everywhere but here!

I might sound stupid but... why 16?
I think because a lot of people get their driver's license at 16 (or at least their permit). And there have been a few My Super Sweet 16 episodes shot in Canada.

Teenage boys.
Teenage boys and Tyga.

But that's none of my business though. *sips sweet tea*

A note for anyone considering it: if you are a minor, it is not okay to date someone in their twenties. I had a 13 y/o classmate in 8th grade who bragged to me that her boyfriend was 21.

Double post but I had to add this:

I saw a clip on Twitter from an old episode of Keeping up with the Kardashians,in which 10/11/12? y/o Kylie is sliding down a stripper pole, and Kim and Kourtney are cheering her on instead of scolding for being trashy on national television.

DO Y'ALL REMEMBER THAT PART IN MEAN GIRLS WHEN CADY VISITS REGINA'S HOUSE WITH KAREN AND GRETCHEN, AND REGINA SEES HER LITTLE SISTER AND GOES, "hey Kylie!" WHILE THE CHILD IS GYRATING TO A MISSY ELLIOTT VIDEO AND WATCHING ALL KINDS OF STUFF THAT A KID SHOULDN'T WATCH BECAUSE HER PARENTS PUT NO LEASH ON HER?

Tina Fey is a psychic and doesn't even know it.

I understand all of this, but its not their money or their budget. I am paying for it. I even took off one option and it brought it down by half.

Pump the brakes there. If you re-read what I actually wrote you'd realize i wasn't implying that it is you vs them or anything about the budget. Maybe they're hurt that you feel like they can't give you something good enough and you're willing to spend your entire savings on it because you don't believe they can/will. And maybe their reaction you alluded to is a knee-jerk reaction because they're hurt and you aren't realizing that.
