I get the identity theft worry but does anyone seriously think a team mom is going to pilfer a kid' birth certificate for identity theft?

As I said before, when I was TM for baseball and football, they were kept in a notebook with me at all times during tournaments and football games. I never had an issue with any parents. Mostly because it was a requirement, not by me but by the sports' governing bodies.

**Maybe I should get my medication levels checked**

you never know if by chance they get dropped, damaged, misplaced or whatever else. Personally I would rather be responsible for my CP"S and no one else's

Probably not, but I also don't know how secure they keep their things. All it takes is the wrong person in the TM's life and bam.

It's just out of my comfort level so I refused to do it. Blacked out, I'd be more likely, but her full birth certificate? Not happening.

You never really know. It's sad, but I've worked with some people who I looked up to, learned from and tried to be like until I found out they were stealing boatloads of money from the company. People do crazy things without looking like a crazy person.

Also, the "crazy cheer mom" thread shows that those wackos do exist. TM might decide to use the info somehow to get a better hotel room.

I wouldn't be comfortable with a TM having a copy of my CP birth certificate. I dont think gyms should be held responsible for false information or altered legal document given to them by parent for an athlete. I'm sure there had to be more investigation into this scenario then just the obvious for it to result in these consequences mentioned.
Plus paranoid me wouldn't put it past a Susie's Mom to try to alter it in some in order to make it look as though any kid (whom she feels is a threat to her own child) is not age-eligible for their division, even if they are.

Out of curiosity, what could a person do with a copy of a birth certificate without a seal and Soc. Sec. number? My BC only has my name, birthdate, parents, hospital and state I was born in. I can find that information out on someone's Facebook page, newspaper announcements or ancestry.com.

Crooks (as I call them) don't need much. The BC contains enough for them to start - including mother's maiden name, which can be used as an answer to unlock passwords, verify identity over the phone, maybe even to get ID in the person's name. Law abiding citizens don't think like that, but the crooks do!

You're right, but it's also not very difficult to find out mother's maiden name if you really want.

I think if a gym is making parents give copies of birth certificates to TMs, or giving TMs access to other kids' birth certificates, they should background check the TMs.

I personally would be uncomfortable w/ a TM having copies of my child's birth certificate - but I really dislike the practice of gyms having TMs to begin with, and I've encountered more than one crazy out of control TM over the years, so I'm sure that influences my opinion.

If there were no TM what would you suggest as an alternative. I like the idea of the TM but I do understand the concerns and issues that I've heard over the years. But what is the alternative? Do you think the TM responsibility should fall solely onto the teams coach? Or do you think the gym should hire enough staff to serve as team assistants to the coach for those duties?

I agree. Not saying any mom would do this, but they may also have your home and work address from gym info. Just recently, DMV officials warned new teen drivers not to post their new license pics on social media because of identity theft.

I'm probably a bit sensitive as I had someone in Texas using my debit card number for several months. The charges were sometimes $400 to $600 per day. BOA put the money back, but it was a hassel because they were coming left and right and I had to continually prove it wasn't me. Meanwhile, when I travel outside of NY/NJ, I have to notify BOA and if not, they will put a hold on my card for trying to buy a pack of gum. Yet, the crooks were having a field day with my card.
