You had this figured out before I did. I don't get out-statted on CA stuff very often. Do anyone have the whole list? I am about to spend a ton of time on that.
I saw a full list on twitter, I'll see if I can find it again

I can't seem to find the thread... but this is an F.Y.I. to the parents who were concerned about a certain cheer dad attending competitions by himself, he posted on Twitter today that he was thrown out of NCA and banned from going to any cheer event from this day onwards.
All this drama was on the other NCA thread, I think it was called NCA 2017 that started awhile ago. Thank god something was finally done. From what I've been hearing, this guy is soooo creepy

That is helpful. Thank you. I still have hours of number-crunching ahead that probably won't happen today.

Rankings, in a basic sense, represent the final goal of our sport. However, they do not remotely tell the whole story and can be very misleading without proper context. I love a win as much as the next guy, but some of my proudest moments of the weekend came from teams that didn't win or necessarily even place super-high.

Unless there is a huge data nerd that loves this type of thing (and has a lot of free time), I may hire someone on fiverr or similar to transfer all of the scoring PDFs into a database/spreadsheet for later analysis. Typically PDFs like the ones NCA puts out don't copy/paste into spreadsheets very easily.

If you don't find anyone. I could do it.

I'd love to help you out with that. Do you have access to all the pdf scores since they weren't made public this year?

This was my CP first year on a worlds team (just became eligible this year). Her team is a very young first year Worlds team and they did fantastic. Super proud of them!! NCA is my favorite comp (even more so now that my kid is in the arena). But here are a few complaints:
1. 4 days is way too long. We didn't fly in until Saturday but even by that time, things sold out. Sponsors left on Sunday. The Vibe of the arena wasn't the same.
2. A team in senior all girl who placed 2nd to last got an AL bid to worlds. This isn't a direct NCA complaint, but the USASF/Varsity need to set some ground rules. Like, if you can't score a --, you have not qualified for worlds

Justin just tweeted - NCA will be 3 days next year. Start Friday afternoon.

I do analytics and reporting for a non profit. Let me know if I can help

GDubs coming to NCA with an At Large Bid.

They could totally improve. But hey! No. You're from Canada so you're no good to us.

If they can't get a partial before Worlds and they end up winning Worlds... ....... .............
I didnt read on, so I apologize if this was repeated, but to my knowledge GWs currently do not have another bid comp scheduled #CanadaProblems

I'd love to help you out with that. Do you have access to all the pdf scores since they weren't made public this year?

They were freely available to every coach at NCA, but not the general public. I would be willing to share them with people who are helping, but I don't feel comfortable making then purely public because NCA didn't. Regardless of whether I agree with their stance on that, I generally want to respect their decision.

The PDFs show the scoring breakdowns, total amount of deductions, and the category averages. Before anyone volunteers, please note that there are probably 50ish data points for each team at NCA, so we are talking about a huge amount of information.

In theory, NCA could just send a spreadsheet/data file with all of this info already in it. Depending on their setup, it could take them as little as a couple of minutes to generate it. My guess is that they won't for fear of giving the appearance of showing favoritism. In fairness to them, it wouldn't REALLY be favoritism, as it was info made available to every coach, but some people would (unreasonably) be upset about it.

Things I would want to research:

Correlation between random-ish day 1 performance order and scores.
Relationship between division size and score variance.
Relationship between outlier teams (good or bad) and the following teams' score.
Effect of judges breaks on scoring.

I have my personal theory about some of those things, but it would be nice to either confirm or refute those based on actual data. There are also a few things I would want to look at to help our teams strategically.

I understand that sentiment, but I actually have the opposite opinion. I would eliminate at large bids entirely and just offer paid bids. However, let everyone go who wants to.

Worlds isn't prestigious because it is hard to qualify for. It certainly isn't prestigious because of the venue or logistics. Worlds is prestigious because USASF only allows itself to use the term "World Champions" for its event.

None of that changes or takes away from how hard it is to advance to another round, win, or medal, or make finals.

Touché.

We arrived Saturday as well and there was plenty of merch to purchase in all sizes. We didn't even hit the CC until around 6:30pm. I actually didn't mind everything being shut down by Monday. We weren't fighting for seats at all in the arena. What I didn't like was the kids missing an additional school day. To me that's just blatant disregard for what should come first and I'm not upset that Monday is being cut out.

I'm very happy Monday will be cut out next year. And most of our group had to order sizes to be shipped, however, we were unable to get to the CC until Sunday morning due to flight arrival and practice time. I liked that it wasn't as packed, for sure, but it felt "off" in the arena.
