Random question: In Canada (well Ontario at least), in order to graduate high school you have to do at least 40 hours of volunteer work...do you not have that requirement in the states?

At my high school you had to have 75+ hours of community service to graduate.

On the GPA/ACT/SAT thing, as @SmileCat said, in Florida we have Bright Futures where if you get a 3.0 or better you get the "Medallion Scholars" award which is $75/credit hour. If you get a 3.5 or better then you get the "Academic Scholars" award which gives you $100/credit hour. You also need a 23 ACT or better for Medallion and a 28 ACT or better for Academic. In college, to keep those, you need a 2.75 for medallion and 3.0 for Academic.

I got the Medallion as I had a 3.49 (nope, they didn't round) and a 27 ACT

All this talk about GPA and SAT scores just reminded me how dumb my boyfriend's class is. The number ten kid in his class had a 2.85 GPA. Does anyone else feel like that is horribly low for a top ten student? I had a 3.00 and was 19th.

We had 13 valedictorians last year, who all had 4.0s and took honors classes and fulfilled the requirements. I have a 3.96 and I'm not even sure I'm top 5% bc we have so many who graduate with just one A-....

Are AP classes not weighted where you live? This was 5 years ago so I don't remember exactly, but I wanna say about the top 20 in my class all had over a 4.0 and our valedictorian had around a 4.3.

I have a 3.78 GPA and 4.3 QPA and I'm ranked 55th out of about 590. I'm surprised by the low GPA being ranked 10th.

Nope, all classes are weighted the same. If my ap classes were a different weight I would have over a 4, but alas.... Wouldn't want to make anyone feel bad

WOW! That is crazy. I think the valedictorian of my class had like a 3.8? And she was the highest in my high school's history. You guys make me feel dumb haha.

Eta: Then again when the average graduating class is about 60, you don't have much competivness for top ten.

Do you use GPA (unweighted) and QPA (weighted) or just GPA at your school?

Just GPA
(For the record last year there were about 550 in the graduating class, so 13 valedictorians seems less crazy compared to classes of under 100. It was the most valedictorians we've had, though there are always several!
