I'm black and if I spoke to my mom like that about hair or anything else, I would have been quickly put in my place quick fast and in a hurry. I even knew to keep my mouth shut with a hot comb in my head....

I concur. I wish my CP would talk to me sideways about hair or makeup. She already knows the last thing I want to hear at 5am on competition day is hooting and hollering about her hair.

Basically a sport derived from cheer without actual cheering.. Head to head competition with quarters and whatnot. Fits title 9
s description of a sport

call me stupid if you want, but i dont get why this is so different from what is already college acro and tumbling. i get why people do and do not want allstars to be considered an actual sport, but im confused as to why they would come up with this STUNT sport all of a sudden. then again the video doesnt do that great of a job going in depth about what it is to begin with.

I completely agree that it could be something happening at Suzy's Mom's Barnyard Allstars. I also think appearance could be a deciding factor at gyms where the talent level is so high that everyone is on an equal playing field. When you have 32 out of 36 girls throwing standing to double with above average technique, something has to play a part in who goes where in a formation.

I'll use Orange as an example, even though I know they don't operate this way. Every single girl on that team could be front row jumpers at any other gym in the country. Someone has to be back row, someone has to be front row. When the talent level is so high and so similar across all team members, it certainly wouldn't surprise me if appearance played a part in deciding who goes where.

This is the only way I can see it making sense. If Suzie and Sally are both 100% equal across the board in skills and performance ability, then I can see making a decision based on who looks most put together. Otherwise, putting Sally in the front row because she's "cute" and tan even though Suzie is stronger is just stupid and a big red flag. I have never even thought to choose formation spots based on the appearance of the kids I coach, except maybe trying to balance out height in a formation based on the rows they've already been put in based on skill.

I thought the same thing. I had to watch actual videos of the game to understand it fully. I would assume they want STUNT to be a sport because it's basically competitive cheer molded to fit Title IX, making it a sport, so it gets the funding/training/safety that it should.

I couldn't tell you the differences between A&T and STUNT though. I know there are a few but I don't think they're that major.

Most these teams a part of the cheer program? I know UDel all girl squad did stunt. Can we just make it so the competition aspect be STUNT and sideline be traditional cheer?

All star can't do STUNT. There are too many gyms, age level, skill just too many aspects that will make it almost impossible. But STUNT in schools could work.

I'm pretty sure STUNT was just Varsity's response to A&T because you know, they don't like when other people take over cheer lol. So a couple years ago when A&T popped up to give cheer something that could become a sport at the collegiate level, STUNT came shortly after. So they're kind of the same thing I think, just different people running them.

It would be interesting to study what type of families and athletes the high glitz attracts to Allstar and which ones it turns away.

Having a child interested in high glitz pageants, I always say, while every cheerleader/dancer/gymnast , isn't a pageant kid, every pageant kid is a cheerleader/dancer/gymnast.

Hijack/Sidenote:

Another KEY difference with STUNT/A&T as I understand it:

In STUNT, participants may be part of the STUNT team and on their college/university cheer teams. Ex: Oklahoma's stunt team is composed almost entirely of OU cheerleaders.

With A&T, you CANNOT be part of the school's cheer team and A&T (as far as I know.) Ex: You can't cheer for Oregon AND be on Oregon's A&T team.

ETA -- info from the NCATA (governing body for A&T) FAQ page:

Q: Will Acrobatics and Tumbling athletes be crossovers in other varsity sports or with the cheer team?
A: No, we want to CREATE new opportunities for female student-athletes, not shift them.

So kids looking at A&T for college will need to choose between collegiate cheer OR Acro.

The difference between STUNT and A&T is that STUNT is going head to head with each other on the same floor, while A&T is set up in meet style. There are six divisions; acro, pyramid, tosses, jumps, running tumbling and standing tumbling. All the acro will go at one time. Then all the different teams pyramid will go. That's one of the differences I've noticed.
Side note: Oregon A&T is amazing and I got the chance to train with them a few weeks ago

I don't believe that any successful team is placing kids in formations by appearance. I'm sure there are gyms out there that do it- but those are gyms that are probably going to close within a few years. It sounds like something that would happen at Janktastic Allstars. All that coach is doing is setting themselves up for failure.
I disagree.

I don't think someone is putting a cuter kid in the front over a not as cute kid that is better then the cute kid.

However if you have two kids just as good as each other and you have a back extension roll in the opening up front that only one kid is doing as all others are dropping back to do something else.

The cuter kid would be chosen. I'm not necessarily saying tan but definitely I think appearance has something to do with it.

I think skills outshine appearance but when skills are the same appearance wins.

Please don't judge me guys

STUNT reminds me of that new show Lifetime just tried to put on with the dance battling...I can't even remember the name of it, but it's like battling for cheer. I can honestly say, without actually attending one of these events; it looks pretty boring. I understand they have to adhere to certain regulations to try and make it a sport, but how they're running their 'games' just seems like football for cheer and I don't really like football.
