When people find out I coach cheerleading and that I cheered through college I almost always get the same response:

"Show us a cheer!"

No.

Yes. This.

First question:
Show me a cheer.
No.
Second:
What do you cheer for
Nothing.

And i'm so tired of explaining everything beyond this that i often say i coach acrobatic. There are no questions after this :-D

When new cheer parents freak out when the coach yells at their kid for a legitimate reason, but they don't bat an eyelash when the same thing happens with a coach from another sport. (NEWSFLASH: CHEERLEADERS SOMETIMES GET YELLED AT. GET OVER IT).

When new cheer parents and non-cheer parents find it unfair that there are actually requirements for making the cheer team, as if it's some cute little club that everyone and their momma can join.

When new cheer parents don't understand that cheer shoes are not your typical pair of sneakers. No, the coach is not trying to get you to spend money, your kid actually needs these shoes.

When people don't understand why cheer music has sound effects.

When people claim that cheer skirts are sexual and force girls into gender roles, but say nothing about the uniforms for girls' lacrosse and field hockey.

When other athletic teams have a million staff members helping them manage everything, but you're expected to do everything on your own because its "just cheerleading".

When cheerleading teams aren't allowed to practice on their own campus.

White spankies. Enough said.

The fact that other athletes can make mistakes like doing badly in a class or being caught at an alcohol-fueled party and have the action attributed to them as an individual, but a cheerleader makes the same mistake and everyone attributes it to the fact that she is a cheerleader.

The fact that some GROWN ADULTS hold a grudge against cheerleaders because one bullied them in grade school. (Yes, people like that actually exist.)

Parents that see no problem allowing their kids to watch TV shows that negatively portray cheerleaders, but will freak out when other stereotypes are presented.

Irresponsible cheer coaches.

Cheerleaders, coaches and cheer parents that don't take cheerleading seriously but have the audacity to get mad when outsiders don't either.

Fools that ask "why are you allowing your daughter to be a cheerleader? Is she that desperate to be popular and fit in? It's not like she's going to be a professional cheerleader (THEY. ARE. NOT. CHEERLEADERS.)"

And my favorite: "It's not like she's headed to the Olympics". And your child is? If you knew anything about Olympic commercial success, you would know that your kid has to medal and be in one of the right (read: marketable) sports for you to see any sort of return on your investment. Otherwise you've wasted hundreds of thousands of dollars. Having a kid cheer at a big Division I SEC school is a far more practical goal, albeit costly.

When people say that cheer is basically competitive dance. Understand that it's the closest thing to which they can compare it, but sheesh.

When competitions have no spotters. I don't see why some EPs don't employ spotters.

When a million teams wear the same 3 or 4 uniform styles.

Idiots who claim that you can't win at cheerleading.

When parents of kids in other sports claim that cheerleaders are spoiled and entitled, but yet their kids get all of the basic sport necessities handed to them, and THEY believe that they are entitled to demand that we be at every game to support their kids, while none of them think to come to our competition or at least thank us for our support.

The fact that at many schools, an athlete in another sport can get hurt and everyone tries to help them yet when a cheerleader gets hurt, no one cares.

When schools treat their cheerleaders as if they are not even a part of the school, and yet still expect them to support the school and raise spirit.

People who think it's ridiculous that cheerleaders train year-round.

When cheerleaders get bullied by other female athletes.

When people hear about a cheerleader being bullied and claim that she deserves it because she is a cheerleader.

When teachers assume that you are dim because you're a cheerleader.

When older people ask "what's with all of this competition? What happened to the days when cheerleaders only wanted to do what they're supposed to do: supporting their teams?"

The fact that people worship UK Basketball but have no idea how amazing the cheerleaders are.

When people complain that their school's cheerleaders aren't attractive enough, yet have the audacity to turn around and call us superficial.

People who make 'I Hate Cheerleaders' videos on Youtube and get upset when they receive angry comments.

People that represent our sport badly.

People that do things that make it difficult for us to defend our sport against critics.

People who can't tell the difference between cheerleading and pom dance.

People who refer to cheerleaders as 'pom-pom girls'.

People that objectify us.
I'm actually not a fan of spotters lol.
At the first comp of the season one almost took her out. She was going to her jumps after stunts and he was running back and she spent several counts getting around him!
She missed her whole first jump and didn't even get to prep the second jump.

Not sure if the links work, in like the first second I point to her. (It's super slowed down so sorry) but like he was trying to go around as she was... It was soo funny lol

Competition spotters are awful.

The Fierce Board: aka Cheernado!

I almost tumbled into one my sophomore and junior year at both regionals and state. Fortunately they moved in time. But it happened all the time at our regional/state competitions. They were always getting in the way!

When people say cheerleading isn't a sport and then say it's the same thing as dancing . Or compare us to a professional squad . Or when poorly trained cheerleaders squeal and say go team ! After a cheer or chant .

I think you are a nice person and are trying so hard not to go down the same path of that thread.. But I will just tell you one thing that may help even more.

I'm not sure if you're aware but every post you end your sentence with punctuation which is appreciated but there is a space between the word and the punctuation that shouldn't be there. I'm not a grammar nazi as I'm not even speaking correct English or using the correct punctuation half the time. However the extra space draws a lot of attention to it kind of like typing in caps.

It just looks like this . I just wonder what the period is doing way out there . I can tell you I'm not the only one . Also this takes added work and keystrokes . So it's even easier to do it the right way .

I didn't realize that before. When answering questions, I am on mobile a lot. So I can't see things the way I would be able to on a desktop view. So thank you for the correction. Thank you for the kind words and not attacking me for the view mistakes I had. I'm horrible when it comes to grammar.

I'm usually only on the computer at night time .

It's ok I suck at grammar too:) lol

I forgot one: when, in the comments under an article insulting cheerleading (written by some bubblebrained fool, of course) cheerleaders try to defend cheer by resorting to base insults and curse words and using (what they don't realize to be) deplorable grammar.

Way to make us look bad.

#2 (I know I said that I only forgot one but now I'm angry again so the peeves are flowing): When a cheer team is awful and gets mad that nobody respects them.

#3: Ugly uniforms. This has been said countless times, but ugly uniforms are truly an insult to cheerleading and a slap to the soul.

#4: When articles about cheer, written by non-cheer people (let's call them NCPs from now on) open their pieces with some cheddary line from the 1950s (e.g. gimme an A!).

#5: I wish I could use some choice words to talk about this one, but I have a reputation to uphold: when people claim that cheer started in the NFL, or that it was invented to oppress women (I had no idea that such stupid people exist, I'm not sure whether I want to laugh or vomit when they open their mouths...)

#6: Parents that behave as if Armageddon has begun when their son or daughter asks to do cheerleading, and frantically try to get him or her (usually her) interested in something else.

#7: People who claim, "you can have pickup soccer/basketball/football/baseball/tennis matches when you're an adult, but you can't have pickup cheerleading matches!"

True, but you can still tumble and stunt. Well, not YOU (or 99% of the population, for that matter), but you get my point.

#8: When parents in other sports get mad when cheerleaders get celebrated for their hard work and claim that cheerleading is pointless (only because they don't like it), and claim that spotlight is being taken from other students. Funny how their tune changes when it's their kid being celebrated.

#8: When gymnasts rag on cheerleading. This part really needs no explanation. I get that you guys hate our janky tumbling, but those of you that insult us with stereotypes aren't doing yourself any favors.

#9: People-- I'm sorry, numbskulled fungus-eating toefaces who say,"cheerleading? Why can' you put your daughter in dance or gymnastics? It's the same thing. What's cheerleading (insert digusted face) going to teach her? How to date the football team?
:cow:

MOO YOU, CHEER HATER!

#10: The phrase, "if cheerleading is a sport, then (insert ridiculously easy everyday activity) is a sport.

Please, don't embarrassing yourself.

#10: Overbearing relatives and "friends" that that dedicate as much time as possible to convincing you to take your daughter out of cheerleading because according them, it will scar her for life and ruin her future, and they're "only trying to save her". After all, they know what your kid needs better than you do.

#11: People who give you a dirty look when you say that you or your child are/is a cheerleader.

#12: When people claim that "one day, all you cheerleaders (disgusted tone of voice) are going to wake up and realize that cheerleading is useless and won't get you anywhere in life. And your looks will fade eventually (because we all look like models...). And people won't worship you like they do now."

Just shut up. Trust me it's for your own good.

#13: Mediocre conditioning.

#14: Risque uniforms on young teams.

#15: Parents that will support their kid at games, etc for a conventional sport but won't support their kid at games and competitions because they don't like cheer. It's even worse when one kid cheers and the other doesn't, and they give all of their support to the one that doesn't, but none to the one that cheers.

#16: Parents that complain that cheer uniforms are inappropriate while allowing their child to play a sport that requires its athletes to wear much less than the average cheerleader (some of them don't even blink when their kids attend school scantily clad).

#17: People who claim that their school's cheerleaders are doing every bad thing imaginable (drinking, drug use, bullying, etc.) when in reality, those girls are at practice, games, comps and fundraisers. The complainers' kids, on the other hand, are getting buckwild at a weekend party.

I think I've spewed enough lava for tonight. Good night, cheer world.

No, I haven't.

#18:

New Mom #1: I really want my infant daughter to run track someday.
Response: oh how cute, maybe she ran track in high school.

New Mom #2: I really want my infant daughter to be a cheerleader someday.
Response: STOP TRYING TO RELIVE HIGH SCHOOL THROUGH YOUR KID! ALERT! ALERT! CRAZY CHEER MOM! BURN THE WIIIIITCH!

#19: People who fear that their son is gay because he likes cheerleading.

#20: People who get suspicious of heterosexual adult men that are passionate about cheerleading. No, not every man that loves cheer is a pedophile.

#21: People who think that they understand cheerleading competitions without ever having been to one.

#22: Shady, crooked judges.

#23: Ridiculous scoring systems (I'm looking at you, Comparative Scoring).

#24: Weak libs and bent-leg arabesques. Believe me when I say that nothing looks more beautiful than a straight-leg arabesque with open hips.

I hate it when higher level athletes will laugh and make of fun of lower level athletes. When girls panic and won't throw a standing back handspring or tuck. When another athlete who does not have the skill you are working on tries to give you tips. When one team member of a successful team takes all the credit for the success and thinks they are the best.
I disagree with your skill peeve: one does not need to have a skill to know what corrections to give for good form. It helps, but it isn't necessary. Keep in mind that lots of the coaches for elite teams were never that good when they cheered, but they still give great corrections because they know what proper form looks like and how to help an athlete achieve it.

I understand that but I really meant was one athlete who may be younger and not advanced as you tries to give you corrections on a skill they do not have. Also coaches go through training in order to understand the skill more than they did in the past. So there fore their corrections will benefit you.
