All-Star Summit Instead Worlds

USASF runs Worlds and Varsity runs The Summit. The Worlds contract with Disney would have been signed (or whatever legal jargon) by USASF. Varsity is a "totally seperate company" legally, although we all know it's not really seperate.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the way I understand it.
That's pretty funny. Varsity runs USASF. Even though they don't admit it.

If I remember correctly, @ACEDAD (or someone) said that he spoke to a Disney official and they had never heard of USASF - that they deal with Varsity employees and that's who their contract is with.

It was @Sharkdad

Soo, back to my original thought process. All they did was extend Worlds an additional day, raise the prices to attend, create a structure for Monday to make even more money, create an additional event only days after worlds which all seem to bring THEM more revenue!
Summit idea is great but did it have to be at Disney?
If THEY were really concerned about the overcrowding at Worlds, why didn't they put Summit during Worlds dates and move Worlds to another venue?

THEY can do whatever THEY want! We all know who THEY are.

Here's my guess. Off the top of my head, I can remember that USASF has a contract with Disney until next season, meaning the option to move Worlds this year was not there, nor will it be there next season, however after that it will be. I assume the thought process in putting The Summit at Disney involved two different things. 1. Ignoring crowd size, it's essentially the same experience a Worlds level athlete gets, something that was not given to non-Worlds divisions before (at least I don't think). 2. The USASF knows they are going to have to move Worlds after that contract ends if it is do-able, however I doubt The Summit will ever reach the point that Worlds does in being over-crowded, so they want to keep their business with Disney without all the potential dangers/legalities involved with Worlds.
I'm not saying either of these are fact, nor am I positive the 2nd one even makes sense, but these are the thoughts in my head concerning what you've brought up.

I still view Worlds being at Disney as having a MASSIVE opportunity cost for the sport when I imagine what Worlds COULD be if held in an appropriate venue. The overcrowding issues were definitely better, but that was essentially the result of deliberately making it less attractive to spectators. (dramatically increasing prices, moving popular divisions to times when fewer people would be there, adding days which forced extra hotel nights, etc.) I would love for the sport to get to the point where we embrace and nurture the spectator aspect of it.

If they made the park hopper optional and allowed people to stay anywhere they wanted in Orlando would you be more for Disney?

That would help, but my understanding is that the Disney contract forces events to require the park hopper in return for use of the facilities. Younger teams might use the park hopper some, but it is generally wasted (or at minimum, under-utilized) for the older athletes.

Yes, I agree on the wasted. I think if they were to bring the costs down to be more comparable I would be 'fine-er' with Disney.

I think for 3 years now, we have established that changing from Disney (worlds and likely now summit) is not a current option in the foreseeable future, so can we drop it..... sorry was that snotty?

Unless the USASF is not stating the truth, it most certainly is an option in the foreseeable future. Last communication I received from USASF:

As previously stated, the USASF and its board recognize that change is needed within the organization. The board met via conference call on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 and agreed to initiate a process to systematically manage this change. We want to move promptly but do not want to make the mistake, which has occurred in the past, of making significant changes without taking the time to solicit input from all members and stakeholders.

The issues we have identified to address are as follows:
  • Board Make Up: This will include, but will not be limited to, structure of the board, balance of representation and accountability within the USASF.
  • Bylaw Revisions: Revise the bylaws to accurately reflect the current environment and govern USASF properly.
  • Worlds: A comprehensive analysis of everything relating to Worlds including the pros and cons of utilizing Walt Disney World as a venue.
  • Location of USASF Office.
The contract for Disney is up next year. With all due respect, I think this is a perfect time to discuss the location of Worlds.

I just feel like it comes up in almost every thread re: Worlds or anything like it.. that's all - so I personally feel that I am reading the same thing over and over and over... then when it is not discussed for some time, 4 pages later the topic comes back.

I know I am not getting the popular vote here, just stating that I PERSONALLY feel like I can't read a singe thread that contains worlds and now summit in the subject that location isn't brought up a number of time with the exact same opinions/discussion/thoughts, etc.

Sorry.

I was told that IF Disney were to see continued growth over a certain amount of time that they would build a separate venue. Idk the details but if that happens I don't see it ever moving. Jmo.

For what it's worth...and we all know things change moment to moment and there's always "interpretation", but...
A friend and fellow cheer parent who was at Worlds had a discussion with a higher up at USASF (while waiting for session tickets). Said USASF official reportedly said that this was the last year Worlds would be at the current venue.

Sorry.

Duly noted. There are definitely topics I personally grow tired of seeing here as well, so I can definitely relate. I try to limit my Worlds commentary mostly to discussions about Worlds as an event, rather than discussing it in "Worlds updates" or "Worlds videos" type threads, but the last thing I want is for people to just tune the whole topic out.
