You know I kept thinking about how the BTK killer used his job with the security company to gain access to the women he murdered and extrapolated that being a security guard at a huge cheer competition would be a perfect cover for some sicko wanting to grab a young girl.
I still don't know why the security guard texted me that he "gave her to her father". She told me she saw a glimpse of our gym owners husband and told the security guard that she saw him and the security guard then said ok and left. That's when she saw my cheer mom friend who ended up walking her over to were she was supposed to be.
I was so overwhelmed when I found out she was safe that I broke down for a few minutes.

omg this (and watching way too many Law & Order episodes) has me thinking I'll keep doing team rep stuff till CP is done with cheer- I'm with her every second of her competition. Kind of justifies my paranoia. I'm so sorry you had to go through that!!

So I am here at UCA, fun comp. in the last five weeks we have been to four two-day bid comps, triple crown for 3. One was a two-day Spirit Sports with five Summit bids. I asked two of the new to AS cheer moms with two income families if they would be at tryouts in May. Said may not due to travel costs. Our hotel average price is 200 per night. Most of us families have started staying together in one room to split but now, wow, we need a break a little on these hotels and entrance fees.

For the first time in 5 years I have had to double up in hotel rooms with another family due to Stay to Play and $200+ nightly hotel costs. Thankfully I found another mom and daughter I really like. Unfortunately they aren't cheering next year so I have no clue what I am going to do. HATE Stay to Play!!!

This is true, but the world hasn't always had reason to be as paranoid as they are now. It's kinda like how airport security was before and after 9/11. It wasn't taken as seriously because nobody thought it would happen, until it did. Cases like Natalee Holloway's are the reason we are cautious now, but back then I'm sure it was different.

I don't know what "back then" you're referring to, but even when I was young we had reason to be paranoid. Natalee Holloway is FAR from the reason people are cautious now, as we knew way before her case that the world was a scary, dangerous place.

My neighbor was murdered in the 1980s on spring break. Even then, we were surprised by her actions that led to it. Even then, we all said, "But didn't she know that was stupid? Everyone knows not to go with a stranger!"

There have always been murderers and psychopaths in the world. It's not like it's something new.

@SheCheers that is so scary!

And the cheersport story almost gave me an anxiety attack.

I think for me, growing up in a NYC borough, the disapperance of Etan Patz was the definitive life changer. I was either in 4th or 5th grade when that happened; it absolutely changed my parents' perspective on many things. I was walking to school by myself/with peers sans adults from the time I was in 2nd grade, and while the elementary and junior high schools were only a little over .5 miles away, it was on the other side of our neighborhood and we had to either cross over a highway on a long footbridge or walk past a big park depending on the route you took. We still went, but parents were much more nervous after Etan Patz disappeared. And no one knew what happened to him for a very very long time, which made the whole situation even worse and parents more paranoid.

We go to Aruba quite often, and Natalee Holloway inevitably comes up every time. Not to belittle what happend to her by any means because it is tragic, but I view that case more of the "older teen feeling invincible and doing something stupid thinking nothing would ever happen to her" rather than one of a child or teen being in a situation that should not have been a scary one but somehow turned out very wrong.

I don't know how many of you followed the recent situation in Silver Springs, Maryland, about the parents being investigated by CPS for allowing their 10 year old and 6 year old to play at the park and walk home by themselves (about a mile), but the mom is actually a good friend of mine from HS days. I have very mixed emotions about the whole thing - while I agree with her that her kids should be able to do that, it is not something I would have let my kids do at that age, nor would my mom have let me do with my sibs. It is kind of like our uniforms thread title - just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should. My mom at age 10 though was watching both of her younger sisters in the playground near her house.

I feel like I've been independent since I was 16 to be honest. Got a car for my 16th birthday and ever since have been driving back and forth between MI and IN (parents live in dif states 2 hours away), driving myself to comps alone (few hours- to Toledo, Indy, Chicago) and I'm doing a gap year in Costa Rica this upcoming year where I'll be flying alone to and from several times.
OT - where will you be in Costa Rica? We love it there. Plan to retire to Nosara (Nicoyan peninsula) eventually someday if possible.

I need to hang out wherever you met your boyfriend.
You must not have read her stories of the craziness of her boyfriend and the break-up. Trust me: you do NOT want to hang out where she met her boyfriend!
Rich people are all fun and games until you realize they're stupid just like everybody else. :D That and the collateral damage is usually 20x worse. You can buy a personalized yacht with 3 jacuzzis, but you can't buy class or empathy...

He was a friend of a friend who went to NYU. We met on her birthday at a cafe/lounge. He's never known responsibility/respectability, and while some of the people he knows are fascinatingly wealthy and pretentious (I made the mistake of asking someone at a beach party if he went to Penn State because he said he went to college in Pennsylvania, to which he haughtily replied 'U Penn'), most are rather normal. I think the most simple yet shocking moment was that one time we went to the Hamptons and NONE of his friends can drive (or, as is the other case- had their licenses taken away for a DUI), so I had to be the one to drive them everywhere. Nothing like being handed the keys to a Range Rover with a full tank and a Hermes pashmina for the chill. In the end, he was something I couldn't describe without getting my mouth washed out with soap. Ah well. Good stories anyway. I ran off to Ireland for my study abroad and met an Irishman 6 months later. No loss to me!

Jumping in late, but the scary part is statistically speaking we are safer NOW than we were when most of us were kids. The internet has changed so much, but the 24/7 news cycles keeps everyone in a constant state of panic/paranoia unless you unplug from it.

We went to a comp last season where coach's daughter was there (she was 8) and they had to go into warm-ups but coaches husband was stuck in traffic and not at the venue. I put my hand out and she legit locked our hands together and very directly said, 'You do not let go for anything.' I nodded and kept myself locked to her as I escorted her to where all of our programs parents were but you best believe my eyes never diverted away from her. Meanwhile I'm semi-okay with letting CP run to the bathroom with an 8 year old team mate because I'm far more lax.

The Etan Patz case is heartbreaking. I was watching YouTube videos about it, and his parents haven't changed their address or phone number, just in case he wanders home someday.

And the fact that there are sickos falsely confessing to having kidnapped and murdered him is so disgusting and frustrating.

My friend's father worked with the DA's office for years trying to crack this case. It all but consumed him.

I thought they finally recently convicted the guy (or he was already in jail for something else?) ?

Back to the topic. Not a great day for CEA (except Phoenix, who got paid). So, as (expensive) Disney ends, I can see where parents would be frustrated with California on the horizon for SE & SCE, and Vegas for LE. As a business owner, it would make sense to promise to cut travel, to entice families to stay.

My bad! How could I forget Glitter Penguins! They're awesome! They make me happy!

I was talking more about the teams who travel a great deal this season, i.e. the Level 5 teams.
