Does anyone have tips on washing and restyling?

I would only wash if it it smells bad just because dirty hair tends to hold styles better. For styling I curled one of my athletes the night before and put it in a Tupperware container curls side down (so all of the hair collapsed on it self like a pin-curl) and it held perfectly throughout the past two comps.

What ponytail do you use?

It is a Pinup Pony. This the the start of season 3 for this hair piece. It does not stink however the product buildup is a issue. We do straight pony day 1, curled ends day 2 so it is loaded down with heat protectant and hair spray.

The change from straight to curls would make me crazy! I would look into buying a second straight hairpiece, you could get a cheaper synthetic one from a wig store since it doesn't need to be curled.
