Who Is Tired Of Flyers Getting All The Credit For Amazing Stunts?!

I agree, no matter how good the flyer is she won't hit if her bases are terrible. I wouldn't want to fly though. Along with the glory comes so much pressure!

So while watching cheer extreme in Indy I was amazed by their ball up 360 tick tock stunt (as usual), but my girls and i were thinking: why do flyers get all the credit for such amazing stunts? Everyone wanted to get a picture with Maddie. She does a great job with her stunts, but theres no flyer without a base! We wanted to figure out who her bases were so we could get pictures with them. Flyers are the pretty face of stunts but theyre not the only member of the group! What does everyone else think?
AGREED

I call my daughter a "super base" shes 12 and shes 4'9". shes super strong and can even lift me. But she is short and her coaches are not liking her base flyers taller than her. She would rather base than fly. Shes got the "you lift weights, i lift people" syndrome. Anyway, as she is learning to fly. i always tell her to remember the bases. I posted it before and i'll post it again...

A Flyer's Thanks

Thank you to my bases for always being there
It's all because of you that people see me in the air
Thank you to my back spot- I've alot to thank you for
You've landed flat on your back- but never let me hit the floor

For all those times I smacked you- trying to twist down
For all the times I spazzed out- and couldn't get around
For all the times you yelled, "Lock out! LOCK YOUR KNEES!"
For all the times you said ok when I said, "one more time, please?"

I didn't catch your shoulders- its my job as your flyer
You said ok and didn't kill me when I said,"uh, could you catch a little higher?"
When ready to give up- "Stick it!" you would scream
And I could, because of you and the faith in our team.

For all the times you were tired- your muscles were so sore
With a sigh, you toughed it out and let me stunt some more
When trying new stunts and I was scared of what to do
You calmed me down and promised, "Relax- you know we've got you"

Bruises, pain and knuckle scrapes- my basket tosses brought
Backwards, forwards, sideways- I still knew that I'd be caught

I know it can't be easy- catching all my weight
You make it look so easy- we make our stunts look great
And even when we drop one- I know its not the end
You always catch me safely and we put it up again

So for all the times you caught me- you never let me fall
I know that backs and bases work the hardest of us all!!!
You do all the work and I get so much glory
I know it isnt fair that people don't see the full story
Just know once more I thank you- for everything you've done
Without your work and friendship cheering wouldn't be as fun
And every time someone says they're amazed by what I do
I thank you and know that it my heart
Its all because of you.

yeah i do agreee, where as maybe the flyerss body positions and flexibility maybe AMAZING they have to have some bomb bases and backspot to pulll of the stunts that they are getting alll the credit for!

Yes i totally agree that flyers get more credit than the rest of the group and they shouldn't. However, when the stunt falls the flyer is always blamed, i almost never hear coaches yell at bases. For me, basing is way less stressful and i never have to worry about the stunt because i will keep it up no matter what. But, when i fly i have to put a lot of trust in my bases that they will help me make it hit like i do with my flyers, or else the whole thing is blamed on me.

" Much can be accomplished when you don't care who gets the credit"
-John Wooden-

one of the many quotes from this amazing coach that is written on the walls of my gym!!!

Love that quote! I was a base when I cheered so now that I coach I think its almost reversed on my team! I'm constantly getting onto the flyers and giving bases and backs credit. I agree it takes all part, but coaches can usually tell if a girl (no matter what position) is slacking.

So true, bases and back spots get no credit. Without the stunt group the flyer would be standing on the floor, no talent needed for that. All the spots in every stunt group are important and everyone deserve the credit!!

I think we all work hard and deserve credit, bases save alot of stunts from falling but, so do flyers! Here's an example, one time we were doing a ball up full up and almost missed the flyer's foot completely but manged to grab it at the last second, if it wasn't for the flyer staying tight it would have fallen. We both need each other, flyers and bases alike, if we didn't have each other we wouldn't have a stunt!

i sooooo agree. the coaches are always sayin good job to the flyers...but what about the bases ?? we are the ones that have to keep them in the air. if it wasnt for us then the flyers wouldnt be anything

Actually with out either of you there wouldn't be a stunt.
When a flyer falls they are the one that gets the heat at a comp. You hear wow flyer x fell. You don't hear them calling out the bases names. All this attitude about flyers getting the credit is sorry if u ask me. This is a team sport. And honestly if you don't like it so bad then go and try to fly. Bases yes do alot of work but flyers do a lot of work as well. It's a TEAM effort. No one is more important than the other

with the teams that i've been on we always called stunt groups by the flyers name so i think thats why you here of "so and sos stunt fell" or "so and sos stunt is great" but everyone in the cheer world recognizes bases and backspots. I've gotten more recognition as a base than a flyer in my ten years of cheerleading and have been kept on teams because coaches recognized that I'm a strong base/backspot when i couldn't throw fulls at level 5 but I could stunt level 5 and protect my flyers. so i don't think its just flyers that get all the recognition its just that the stunt groups get called by the flyers name
