If you like sci-fi suspense, you might try Dean Koontz. Watchers is my favorite, by far. I had to quit reading Stephen King, somewhere along the way he decided he couldn't let people have a happy ending.

I love Dean Koontz, he always has some crazy twists in his stories. I've only read one or two of Stephen Kings books. I'd absolutely love to read some more of him but I just can't seem to get myself to do it. He puts in too much detail. Do you really have to describe a mans shirt for three whole pages? Just get to the scary stuff already, that's why I'm reading your book, gosh. That's my only complaint about King. After reading the few books and watching a lot of movies based off his books, I've learned to not get too attached to the characters in the stories :p

The Odd Thomas books by Koontz are pretty great, too.

Someone has already mentioned Tom Clancy and I just want to second that thought. Any of the early "Jack Ryan" books are great, but have a pen and paper handy. (Seriously, I always found myself flipping back the first few chapters to remind myself who thus and such character was and what their position was.) And read them in order. Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Clear and Present Danger and Sum of All Fears.

Oh god, don't even get me started on that series.....Take twilight, change the names and add a lot of....eh.....yeah. I don't see the fascination some people have with the series. The writing style isn't anything special and the books portray a fangirl fantasy, no real relationship content. Sigh. I've read the first two due to friends' insistence, but stopped.

Read the Third, things come full circle.

Its not the genre (like I said, I'm a librarian, if I have the desire to read any book I can read any book from start to finish)...I just flat out don't have the interest in reading Harry Potter. It didn't interest me when people started reading them in high school. It doesn't interest me now at 26. For one of my YA/Childrens Lit collection devolopment class projects I steered clear of the series. It just doesn't entice me. I have also not seen any of the movies and I never will.

I used to feel that way (I started reading them VERY late, and at about 27 years old, and never had ANY interest in them, actually scoffed at them and the movies, without even knowing much about them) and then a teacher friend of mine dropped them off when I was pregnant and bedridden, and with nothing better to do, I started and fell in LOVE almost immediatly. I had to wait for 2 more books to come out (the second last one only within a few weeks) and I can't wait for my kids to enjoy them when they get older. I had to eat crow and admit I was wrong, but ti was worth it lol

I literally was just going to come here to start this thread! we need a FB Book Club!

Normally, by now, I have a stack of books to read sitting on my nightstand, as I don't read for leisure much during the school year since I'm busy reading school books.

I just finished the only book I had sitting there.. so now what?

I'm not much of a series person, no matter how amazing it is. I tend to lose interest after book one. I also don't like vampires/witchcraft/things that aren't "real," so to speak.

My favorite author is Kristin Hannah, followed by Patti Callahan Henry and Nicholas Sparks. An obvious theme of the latter 2 is beachy/NC life. and all of KH's books take place in Washington State.

So, if anyone enjoys a book that results in a good cry, I highly recommend Kristin Hannah. I think I sob with every book, they're just so good! Firefly Lane is absolutely amazing.. hits close to home though so I sobbed through the entire thing. I also just finished her newest book, Home Again.. and I think I set a new record by crying before page 100. I wasn't sure I'd love it, since it's about military but it's absolutely amazing. like phenomenal.

I ADORE Kristen Hannah... Every book is amazing. She needs to publish faster because Im all caught up and want MORE! lol Home Again had me sobbing too :'(

So I'm about halfway-ish of 50 shades... and it's really just making me mad. They're just about to meet to go over the contract and I just really want to laugh in Christian's face and smack some sense into Ana. Ugh just so annoying.

That's great! I love literacy. I love reading. I love being a librarian. I love encouraging people to read. I respect all books and I respect peoples decisions to read or not read a book. I know it my heart of hearts HP is not the book series for me, I skimmed my roommates Sorcerers Stone in undergrad....Its not for me. But yay reading!

spiritmama I don't want you to feel like I am passive aggressively accusing you of trying to force a book on me because I realize it may read that way and its definitely not my intent. I have a masters in library science...books and libraries are my life and my career so yeah... I hope you arent offended

If your looking for a light read, I totally recommend any of Chelsea Handlers books (especially Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me). I think she's a bit of a lunatic, but she's hysterical.
