Maybe it's my naivete, but politics never even entered my mind when I first read this thread. I figured it was just something being done to showcase and honor the athletes of the region. I was just hoping it would be to show off their athleticism and not to have them up there are stereotypical sideline cheerleaders.
Don't worry, I thought the same exact thing. To all the people thinking; "How awful for all these republican parents to have their child perform at a democratic event!" First of all people, just because they were invited to put on a show, doesn't mean they will vote for Obama, even if they do, who cares, it's their business. Also, with just about all the girls being in high school, I guarantee they couldn't care less about politics and a good 95% of them can't even vote, most likely. They were invited to represent their state and their sport and do what they do best.
Do politics have to be brought into everything? :banghead:

Thiswill be a generalization, but from what I've watched of American news..yes. Yes it does.

I think it's an amazing opportunity, regardless if its for democrats, republicans, tea party, communists, socialists or cheerocracy. They're not going to be up there saying "G-O Obama Lets Go!". Its to showcase the talent of NC. End of story.

Everyone begs for cheerleading to be recognized at a higher level, and then teams like Senior Elite get opportunities like this to put our sport in people's minds in a better perspective of what we really do, so who cares if it's at a political convention? I think it's good that a team gets to represent our sport in this event wanting to recognize NC's talent. I'm sure that the kids could care less that it is at a political convention considering that none of them can even vote for a candidate

Agree completely! Political views didn't even come to mind... this is just a great opportunity for CEA and a cool experience for the girls in my opinion. I think any team asked to perform at an event of this caliber would be honored and excited to do so.

I don't think that's what most people were thinking. I think they were thinking it was odd of a cheer gym to take a political stance and take their girls to a rally in support of a specific party. I was thinking, how uncomfortable for the girls who might not necessarily share in in the Democratic parties' views. Believe it or not, some high schoolers do care about politics, and many of the girls on that team might be old enough to vote in the next election. While I'm pro-Democrat, some of the girls I cheer with might not be, and if we were in SE's place, I could empathize with them

I see what you mean here and I agree that many high schoolers do care about politics. Like Courtney said earlier in the thread, though, the show is about showcasing NC athletes at a national event. While the event itself is political, I don't think SE's presence there says anything about the gym's political stance or that of the team members, coaches, or parents. I think it's more about the show itself and taking pride in the accomplishments of athletes in their home state.

I dont get the feeling that the cheer gym is taking a political stance at all, but maybe I'm naive too. I get the idea they were asked to perform for a national audience and be recognized as champions in the sport of cheer. I guess I can see where some kids/parents may not want to participate because of political views, but I didn't get the idea CEA is yelling Obama 2012 :)

Oh trust me I know some high schoolers who are VERY into politics... lol
& I'm very sad to say that what I quoted was exactly what someone said on Twitter about this

A lot of high schoolers care about politics. It's actually a pretty common topic. Believe it or not, we do care what happens to our country.

Anyway I think it's slightly less strange if there are other performers from the area cause then it makes sense. I personally would have no problem performing at it but I just can't help but think there's gonna be that one parent...

We were huge political junkies when I was in high school. We would wait for days for the pony express to bring political news.

Anyway, I'm guessing the Democrat Party invited them because CEA Senior Elite will probably draw a bigger crowd than the 2012 ticket.

I just spit water on my screen. Million shimmies for you, ACEDAD

I thought it was a bit strange. I've been to my share of political events, and I just can't think of a time when a performance (by any time) would have actually fit in. Will they actually be willing to install a spring floor for a 3 min performance?

As a high schooler in an area where the Prez visits various schools in the area (one twice, for the back to school speech), many students don't see it as a political thing. It was just cool. His speeches weren't even politically charged. The fact that he is the president, inviting world champions in the area, including cheer, I think that this is just in spirit of getting recognition, especially pre-Olympics. He is still president, and has to/can do somethings that aren't based on his reelection. This isn't about CEA making a political stance, it's just a performance.
