I don't think that her moving back home is a surprise to anyone. Awesomeness tv was teasing the subject at the end of the season and I am sure that her coaches knew too.

I cannot say I am surprise she decided to go home... After watching that Nightline episode, I believe I mentioned that she was unhappy and wanted more to be home in Florida than to be on a winning Worlds team... In the Nightline episode, many people were calling her a brat because Gabi was yelling and snapping at her Mom and talking inappropriately to her Mom... But I thought Gabi was showing all the classic signs of a child who was overwhelmed and wanted her parents to step in and make this important decision for her... Gabi probably wanted to hear her parents tell her to come home, we all miss you, but in the 2 years it did not happen...

Kudos Gabi for making this tough decision and Good Luck in any future endeavors!

Serious note: I think, Gabi was one of the earliest cheerleader who moved away from home to be on a cheerleading team and many conversations on Fierce board derived from this phenomenon happening... Maybe Gabi deciding to come home after 2 years, maybe setting a precedent and trend for other cheerleaders who are deciding to move across country for cheer... Maybe, these young people will now decide to set a time limit on how long they planning to stay and are they strictly doing it for Worlds ring only or for the experience, etc...

Did Gabi not move away only 2 years ago? This phenom has been going on for longer than that as I've had the conversation with my cp years ago in hopes he could try it.

Could also be wrong but also recalling her mom lived with her and may have even hosted some kids.

@John Butler any chance you could verify the latter for me?

The reason why I mentioned Gabi Butler moving away for Cheer as a phenomenon, I do not recall anyone else doing it before her and it gotten so much recognition... If I am wrong please correct me and provide me with other high profile athletes names that done it 3 or 4 years ago...

her dad would obviously be the best source of info - but as per the show, her first season on Smoed she lived with Jenee and family. this past season her mom rented/bought a house nearby and Gabi obviously stayed with her mom and I believe Emily (from CJA), Xavier (from Canada), and possibly Robert all lived in the house? (at least that's who was always filmed in the house last season.) This season her mom went back to Florida so she would have been staying with another host family (no idea who, but i'd guess a teammate.) i feel like after having you mom there it'd be even harder to go back to living with a host, but that's just me.

moving and being hosted is not a new concept, at all, but i hope kids who are considering moving look at Gabi as an example that it may be worth it, but it is extremely difficult to be a child without your family. i'd call her an exceptionally dedicated and driven athlete and look, sometimes it just doesn't work.

I wonder, too, if being in the smoed environment is easier when you have your family with you. It's both mentally/physically exhausting be constantly on edge and working to make sure you don't lose your spot (as opposed to working to make the team better)- and while you want that drive and push, it's not for everyone and can be VERY difficult without a solid support base. While a substitute family is fine in the short term, having your actual family there can make it MUCH easier for the long term.

I'm not saying she's weak/couldn't handle it, but that much pressure can compound very easily.

Her younger sister went with them last year and cheered at Cali too. So I think it would definitely be hard to go from having your mom and sister there to having nobody.

I definitely agree that this not an uncommon thing for other sports, particularly, gymnastics and figure skaters to move away and live far from parents, family and live with host families, but I think for cheerleading this is and was a new thing, primarily because this AS cheerleading is not considered a sport outside of our circles and there is not a tangible rewards beyond Worlds...

Yes, Gabi, Marci (CEA) and Angel were all going to be housed with one of the girl on the team name Kendra this upcoming season. Which probably led Gabi to feel even more alone and homesick, if she felt overwhelmed with her Mom in Cali, I can only imagine what anxiety she was feeling...

2 years ago is about when the cheerlebrity craze really came about so prior to that heard of the kids flying in big never really knew their names. At least it was that way for me. The only cheerleb name I can offer up is Matt Smith who has been flying in to CA since the 2010 season.

There is a BIG different between Matt Smith, who is actually driving down 4 or 5 hours, I believe from Oklahoma and what Gabi has done. Gabi uprooted her whole life and moved across country, stayed her 1st year with a host family and 2nd year, uprooted her Mom and sister to housed other athletes... Matt never moved and stayed in Texas with a host family, Matter of fact, I can name 100 and 1,000 of young people who are doing long commutes like Matt Smith to cheer for a team, but to actually stay with another family and not go to traditional school, etc... I am still trying to think of another cheer athlete to do it before Gabi...

She wasn't the first to do it, I think she was just the first well-known person to do it (at least that I can think of). I know some people who were living with host families in the 09, 10, 11 seasons and so on but they are "no-name" athletes so it's not something people would know. But she definitely wasn't the first athlete to move across the country and live with a host family, probably just the most famous one.

I swear there was someone on the board who said the Rosarios have been host parents for some Top Gun athletes back in the day.
