The issue I have with the whole giant pony thing is everyone is using the reasoning "well it saves her hair". Then why the heck are gyms demanding parents back comb their child's hair to the point of damage? So now on top of the $12,000 a year we pay for tuition, comps, travel, registration, uniform, ect...we now have to purchase giant hairpieces?
I haven't seen it lately so maybe people have finally come to terms with the fact that all star will never be considered a real sport by the mainstream world, but the makeup and ridiculous hair is two of the biggest things people focus on when pointing out how much AS is like a pageant "with flips".
I don't understand why gyms have an obsession with giant hair, it doesn't do anything for your score except possibly cost you 1st when one mom doesn't secure the wiglet well enough. All it does is make AS the laughing stock of youth sports.

This. Thank you.

So glad my CP gym doesn't have those crazy hair requirements. Our styles are simple: straight ponytail, curled ponytail, or half up half down curls or straight. Those are the hairstyles we've had in the past 4 seasons. I'm happy to not have to deal with those hair puffs or bumps or whatever they are called or those huge ponytails that are bigger than the athletes head and/or bow.

I wish more gyms were like yours. There is nothing wrong with a straight or curly ponytail or 1/2 up 1/2 down. They're cute, simple, and cause minimal to no damage to your hair.

Mind you, I don't blame the parents for buying them...if my kid was in the position of "your pony must be 6 inches ABOVE your bow" I would probably be buying one as well.
I place blame completely on a male dominated coaching industry that has no idea about girl's hair, or their bra needs by the looks of some of the uniforms I've seen lately.
A team should be able to wear burlap sacks and place first if they have the skill. The fact that "being pretty" or having high hair, stage makeup, and uniforms that only look good on Kate Moss can sway a score is really disappointing. We are trying to teach our girls that in a media driven society that those things don't matter, yet turn around and teach them the exact opposite by convincing them that they MUST do these things in order to be #1.
Fake hair, fake tan, fake eyelashes, makeup making their faces look older. Now all we need is flippers on tiny teams because who wants to see a gap tooth grin during a routine? <heavy sarcasm implied>

I wish I could shimmy this 100x!!!

LOL! I've thought of this and hope it never becomes a thing.

The gym I coach at does straight back high ponytails and our parents love it. The kids don't really seem to care what they have to do with their hair, but I bet they do love getting to sleep in a little longer [emoji6] the kids can tease their hair if they want but it's not required or expected. We do have several girls that wear those hair pieces though.

Our R5 is doing curly teased ponytails this weekend for NCA because they voted as a team to do it.

I love seeing those toothy gap smiles! Best part of being 5-6yrs old!

I agree it can get out of hand. Don't even get me started on bras. Function should be main focus, and saving the tissue damage from tumbling. The girls will have plenty of time to sag over the years they don't need a boosted start.

Hey I have a coupon code too if anyone is interested :)
Could I get that code too?
My CP practically has a panic attack when she sees the teasing comb and hairspray come out because she know how hard it is to untangle afterwards. Lately she's been competing with a dead limp pony. Thought I might hear it from her coach but she hasn't anything.

I did forget to add that we have been using a Posh Pony (curled) all season. Was it expensive? Yup, but worth every penny, for so many reasons! My CP's hair is not damaged, hair and make up (and everything else) is done in about an hour - at a leisurely pace, and if the schedule allows, she gets to hang out with her friends on Friday/Saturday night instead of sitting still while I put Curlformers in. We are more relaxed, having a better time and getting more sleep courtesy of her Posh Pony, who has been lovingly named Frank, by another Cheer Dad! SO worth it!

ETA - I must be doing something right, because I always have girls coming to me to do (or fix) their hair and make up at comps. I guess the hooker look is in.

I would love to see a pic of it curled!

I posted this picture to answer questions. I appreciate those of you who didn't call my daughter a hooker. ;)

And if you want one, let me know and I'll tell you where you can get one and help you save a little money with a coupon. If your gym requires big teased hair, they are a huge time saver, not to mention that they save the hair from a lot of damage.

Edited to add:
I will address two things quickly before I officially drop this. First, my CP doesn't even wear eyeliner, so I'm not sure where the 'hooker eyeliner' comments are coming from. In those photos, she's wearing smoky eye makeup, mascara, a little blush and bronzer, and red lipstick. Truthfully, that's not much different than what I wear every day except that I don't wear red. Red lipstick is required for uniformity on all of the athletes at our gym.

Two, I cannot believe that her skills are being called into question because of the height of her hair or her makeup. Do you know my CP at all? Or any other athlete that you pass in the hall of a comp? What in the world makes you think that you are entitled to judge anyone's skill level by the height of their hair or their non-existent eyeliner? And to judge them as you pass them in the hall no less? That just seems a bit juvenile to me. But to each his/her own.
And she's beautiful!
