You're right cheer isn't for everyone, which is darn shame because we all know the benefits that come from being part of team where there isn't a sideline to sit on. I will keep on providing affordable services for the families in my area, even if it means performing to Kyle Blitch 8 counters. Why? Because teams shouldn't be judged on their music, the amount of rhinestones or name on their uniform, or who shows the most skin. In the end it should be the team that goes out and slays their routine in difficulty, technique and performance. Parents shouldn't have to have a second or third job to allow their child to cheer, nor should they have to spend a full year of college tuition for a season of cheer.
I have nothing against large gyms. Most of them started out small. However, cheer shouldn't only be an option for the top tier tax brackets.
I disagree. Cheer can be for everyone. There are so many different options. Sideline, Rec, school, even varying degrees of all star. There are many gyms in my area that go to smaller local competitions and the music, uniforms, etc don't have to be custom and their teams can still be competitive on that circuit. They are successful in their own right and don't go to Worlds, Summit, NCA, UCA, etc. Not everyone involved in cheer has to go to Worlds or Summit!! It the same way in most sports. I showed horses for more than 20 years. I will never get to the World Championships because I can't afford the trip, the trainer, or the type of horse it takes to be competitive there. As much as I would love to experience it, the fact that I have never been hasn't tainted my experience showing at the smaller shows throughout my childhood. I only did school gymnastics as a kid because my family couldn't afford to do anything else. I turned out ok regardless of the fact that I didn't participate in the "end all be all" of either activity that I was involved in. Yes, there are "have and have nots" in all aspects of life, including cheer. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

You have to understand, it is no longer legal to use music from major artists unless you want to pay the $5,000 a song for rights.

It is not 'I can't believe they are making us do this'.
It is:
I can't believe we got away with using illegal music for so long.
TOTALY agree with this

That's pretty much my entire point. Cheer should be for everyone, even those that want to compete because they find sideline and rec (just a little kids' version of high school/college sideline) boring.

How many songs are usually in one mix? This site has 10 songs for $150 and then you'd either mix it yourself or pay someone to mix those songs (or the music producers would be buying songs in bulk and leaving you out of it.) Yes the prices are going to go up, but adding an additional $150 divided by the kids on your team isn't going to run anyone out of business. Using illegal music and getting sued by the music industry would run you out of business in lawyer fees alone.
Depends on the music producer. I have no issue with paying for music. But school/rec/small gyms used to be able to get a decent mix or premix for around $300.-$500. So going to $800 for a standard compliant mix is a steep increase. Sadly, our fundraiser will have to go to offset the steep music increase instead of new equipment.

Where do you see who and what is authorized?

Will varsity or USASF make announcements and state clearly what is expected. I'm assuming they will after world's and summit.

Varsity/USASF is rumored to be making an announcement regarding music requirements for next season in May after Worlds. Info regarding unleashthebeats.com are coming from the cheer music industry.

This. Like AngelsMum24 said, there are a million ways in which to cut costs. A kid can still have a challenging, fun, exciting competitive experience (in rec, school or all-star) without their parents having to break the bank.

I know that this is the AS forum, but I wanted to point out how interesting it is that there are HS cheer programs that don't compete or rarely do so, and yet have kids paying fees in the thousands every season, and other programs that have highly competitive, well-trained kids that only pay a fraction of what kids in the former type of programs have to pay. It's crazy.

After listening to alot of the songs on Unleashthebeats.com, a good majority of them are techno remixes and cant be used for stunts. Maybe like running tumbling but uh stunts. Sorry no.

Aren't we allowed to use royalty free music? Sometimes they have good songs!

Update: Cover songs are also illegal. So there's that.

A lot of people are saying that "no gym would go out of business because of music". My old gym literally had 27 athletes (two teams) and the younger team had about 9 athletes (kids would quit often). They typically recycle music to cut down costs since there's so few kids, but what are they going to do now? They have no option (unless they're going to compete to an 8 count track). I think the rule is necessary and 100% logical, but it's going to be hard. (And no, they don't get practice wear or fancy shoes, bows, uniforms etc..)

Ugh. I guess my idea of using news anchors' voices to make covers of songs won't work.
But like I said earlier, some hooked on classics/hooked on baroque style remixes would work. Especially since music from that era is public domain. And music from the Revolutionary War era.... Each idea I have is more terrible than the previous one.

Great, I can't wait to see a routine to Frank Sinatra.

Start spreading the news… it is really 1922 or older music which is in the public domain.

Eta: Public Domain Music

Some of the song styles stuff would make good themes and could work with some original beats to make interesting mixes.

This is going to take a lot of thinking outside the box.

As I was watching the Stingrays worlds teams tonight (thanks Meg for periscope!) I thought about this thread when the two international teams went. If this is a USA rule, how will this effect teams from other countries coming to worlds? I assume that the rules don't apply in their country. Or do teams from other countries use American producers already? I'm not exactly up on my knowledge of international teams.

Clarification please-

Is it "popular" music that is the problem? Or is it all music? So, we can't use Rihanna's "Work" but could we use old school Paula Abdul?
Found this... "Copyright protection may be 50 to 70 years after the death of the last surviving author, 95 years from publication date, or other copyright protection term."

So technically we could all rock the music of the early 1900's.
