The one thing I hate about curling my hair is that it doesn't matter how hard I try or what I do whether I do it the night before or not. When I take the rollers out or at the end of my routine, the curls seem to end up in one BIG GIANT curl and if I try to separate them my hair gets frizzy and I'm not gonna spend $80 at the beauty pallor for them to slap on a bunch of black gel.

No gel please!!!!

My only question is this - we ALL know by now that cp has relaxed hair, and curling it for comp is a pain. Curling iron is a no, so I use mousse on dry hair and sponge roll it the night before. It works, but doesn't give that big, poofy, pageant-curl thing that the coach really wants. He does NOT want spiral curls or waves. He wants 80's "Dallas" hair. So, how do I do that?

I say you tell her coach that your cp has ethnic hair and it can't do that and your not going to pay money to goto the parlor and you don't want to put weave in it, which is also an option, but let them know you will try your best. Also ask if you can do the same style but just straight it really won't make a difference or just see if she can wear a headband.

You haven't met Coach Mike, have you.

@icequeen , I haven't. Only because up until this year, cp was on a Youth team and meet times were at ridiculous-o-clock in the morning. Might try them, though. Have you used them?

No I actually went to buy some at Sally they were alittle expensive ($43-60) for a college student budget at the time but I have heard good things about them and hopefully I can buy some soon. Amazon and walmart has some at reasonably prices I just couldnt find any in the actually Walmart store.

When my daughter was younger and we curled her hair I rolled her hair and then she sat under they dryer. I purchased one of the dome ones that you can sit under. It still didn't dry fully but then she just slept in the curlers. Some days I brought the dryer with us to comps and she sat under it some more.

This is before it grew so it's even "bigger" now, don't think it would be safe to let it fly lol

Recent picture, no matter what it's work lol

I wet set or use rods on my daughters hair the night before(she sits under the dryer for about 40 mins to set the curl). I use Narobi setting foam. It leaves her hair soft and with a moderate hold. I use it on mine as well. Sometimes I spiral curl it dirty only because I have to use a holding spray to keep the curl, but the next day I wash it. I don't like to leave all that hair product in her hair. @My3KidsMom u may wanna try the "mixed chicks" product line for your baby's curly tresses but the Narobi mouse will tame it a lot.

Id suggest curlformers for people with ethnic hair. They seem to work for all hair types according to youtube. I dont have ethnic hair, but I do have hair that is thick and doesnt like to do what I want it to do, aka curl, and they work fine. Its a pain in the butt to sleep in, but they work.
Curlformer work wonders on ethnic hair. At worlds 2011, my team competed at 7 in the morning and there was no way i was waking up at 4 in the morning just to curl my hair so i slept with them overnight and when i took them out the next morning my hair looked as if i had just curled it that morning. Their awesome:)

Thanks, everyone tells her they love it, I believe she has come to love it now. We use to get it relaxed until we got talked into the semi permanent straightener that resulted in all of the hair on the top of her head breaking off :( @Twinklilstarsmom she just got a product from Target called Curls and it works great WHEN she uses it as directed :)

Ethnic cannot take alot of heat, setting the hair with flexi rods amd setting lotion works wonders, springy spiral curls that last all day! For Eightys hair do a typical rollerset on damp hair with mouse let them dry take out the rollers add a light oil ( i reccomend argan oil from sallys 5$) adds shine mmoisture and beats the frizz!

then seperate with your fingers. @allthatglitters after you washed you hair apply some setting lotion then gently brush your edges straight back as smooth as possible then either put on a heabdand or scarf and allow it to dry and straight smooth edges!

Has nothing to do with issues with ethnic hair but I'd love to see them perform with a Mohawk! Lol I did my daughters hair like that when she was 3 and it was fierce!
Here is a pic- I wish I had a better one or one from the back where u could see it but still totally cool! Idk how the bow would fit in. :(
