We've always had fun with ours. The best was when I worked for a private family practice. Tons of silly gifts, some nice alcoholic beverages, etc. I guess some people are just kill joys. Maybe I don't love what I end up with but hey...it's a white elephant and may end up in the madness again next year! We do it with our family. We have a stupid duck we decorate...if you get it, you have to decorate it and bring to the next family get together.
I agree! Though, I think that white elephants are better for older people because kids can easily get upset with their gifts. If you do it with kids, it's best to set a specific white elephant item, like socks. Then everyone brings socks and they swap from there.

My mom's boyfriend has a gigantic family, like rent out a ballroom, gigantic. So all the adults do white elephant and then the kids get presents. The most memorable gift- a squatty potty! We all laughed.

I'm stuck on what to get my roommate this year. I think we're going to fill stockings for each other.

It is rare to see dirty Santa played that someone doesn't walk away hurt or angry. Either they get a crappy gift or one that obviously didn't cost the minimum amount.

I absolutely despise it and would much rather draw names and have the people write a few items as ideas along with their name.

Same same same. I despise the white elephant game.

One of my very older cousins contributes THE WORST gifts. One year it was a floating duck butt used for target practice. Another year it was a box full of rusty bolts and nails and screws. A different year it was a box of old refrigerator magnets. The very last year we did it was a box filled with 40 of the same Bing Crosby Christmas cassette tape... Don't participate if you're going to give junk from your basement. Literally junk. From your basement.

We haven't played it since.

My room mates and I used to do grab bag - so if you have 6 people participating, you buy 5 small presents. When it's your turn to "give", you put your 5 gifts in the bag, and everyone else draws out one gift and opens it (there's no stealing like in white elephant). You do it 6 times and at the end of the thing you get 5 presents - one from everyone. I loved it.

I love White Elephant. I just don't go into it thinking I'm going to get a present I actually want/need. Then if I end up getting something useful it's just a pleasant surprise. I guess to me it's more about the experience than actually leaving with something lol

Me too! I love white elephants. Last year I got spoons that had little ice cream sundaes on the top of the handle. The year before that I got a mini spray Lysol you're supposed to spray on the toilet seat :D we did it every year in yearbook and it was always fun! I think it's most fun with a tight knit group, that way people kinda know what to expect bc they know everyone else and you get really funny gifts (like my small group did it and one present was a framed awkward middle school pic of one of our leaders)

Honestly, it might be worth it to get a straightener there if youll be gone for a month. I think I paid 20 pounds for mine which is roughly 35 dollars. It also depends on how much you straighten your hair.
I straighten my hair everyday unless I feel like taking the time to curl it lol. I'd probably curl it 3 times while i'm over there so I might just buy a straightener over there.
I'm starting off in Dublin and making my way through London, Amsterdam, Paris, Monaco, and several other places before ending up in Barcelona. If I buy one in Dublin, would I need an adapter or anything for the other countries?

Did you see their Black Friday special? Give them $5 and get nothing in return. They raised over $70,000. [emoji23]

**I saw it on the internet so it must be true**

Bwahahahahahaha! No, but that is priceless.

Yes. The plug configurations are not universal across Europe.

Exactly, it was perfect for our high school squad Christmas party.

I got that email and was like "is this a joke?" I had to reread it again to make sure it wasn't. But $70,000 holy cow! Maybe next time I can get them to sponsor me and by "me" I mean my student loans.

If I recall correctly the company only has 17 employees and the money is being used a Christmas bonuses. Each employee will get around $4,300.

Dublin uses the same as London, but the rest use a different plug. But the voltage is all the same over there so youd just have to buy a plug converter for UK to europe which you can get on amazon.
